Orior Elevates Irish Craft With One Domino Square Penthouse

Ireland has rapidly become a key player in the world of modern collectibles, a development that has unfolded gradually since the early 2000s. The design firm Orior, based in Newry, has been pivotal in transforming how Irish creativity is perceived globally. With a focus on studio crafts such as furniture, Orior is moving beyond the shadows cast by Ireland’s European counterparts.

Orior’s recent project takes their distinctive design ethos to a whole new level, within one of the three penthouses atop the iconic One Domino Square in Brooklyn, crafted by Selldorf Architects. Although interior design is not their usual focus, this collaboration provides an ideal opportunity for Orior and its craftsmen to display their unique style in a full-scale residential environment.

“Our collaboration thrives on a mutual respect for designing spaces that blend top-tier aesthetics with practical living,” notes Jordan Trinci-Lyne, Brand Director at Orior. “In designing this penthouse, we aimed to craft a dwelling that radiates elegance while also offering a welcoming, timeless appeal.”

Each two-story unit features three large bedrooms, 3.5 opulent bathrooms, and two distinct living areas, one of which opens out onto a vast private terrace with stunning views. The design utilizes the generous proportions, bold statements, and industrial chic of Orior’s pieces to provide a foundation for the home, achieving a luxurious yet restrained atmosphere.

As curators of style and craftsmanship, Orior has leveraged its network to source the finest upholstery, leather, stone, and metals to craft heirloom-quality furniture with bespoke finishes, available exclusively to residents of One Domino Square. This careful selection enhances the apartment’s ambiance, integrating the architecture with unmistakably Irish influences in texture, color, and materials.

Each area within the apartment boasts its own color scheme, creating distinct experiences within the overall design. However, the primary living spaces – the living room, dining area, and kitchen – maintain an overarching visual flow. These spaces are composed of layers that harmonize yet preserve their uniqueness, featuring mature, subtle combinations of natural marble, limestone, soft bouclé, and velvet. These elements are complemented by warm woods and luxurious fabrics, highlighted in details like custom rugs by Katie Ann McGuigan, alongside lighting fixtures from Blue Green Works and Bocci.

The rich tapestry of materials used continues to resonate throughout the space, incorporating local Irish green marble, exquisite recycled crystal crafted into smooth forms, hand-picked limestone, and touches of bronze and brass for elegance. Solid oak echoes the native Irish forests, and high-performance fabrics show off Orior’s versatility in both indoor and outdoor environments.

Signature pieces are re-envisioned with new finishes and bespoke furniture designs, such as curved counter stools inspired by the Eli Chair, specially designed for the penthouse. Classic items, like the Nero Table, are reinterpreted in walnut and Irish limestone, and the Eli Chair is reupholstered in white bouclé rather than traditional chenille.

Visitors and potential buyers will also discover new pieces that extend Orior’s creative vision, showing the brand’s ongoing evolution. Bedrooms feature specially designed furniture that incorporates elements of Orior’s renowned Atlanta, Néad, and Gian designs. The apartment also includes customized side tables, textiles, and artwork by Cameron Stewart that adorn the walls, enriching the space’s aesthetic.

Orior’s design language, with its whimsical narrative and organic silhouettes, continues to captivate a growing audience, hinting at possible future expansions.

“Some have said that despite a fear of heights, they would overlook it to reside in this space,” mentioned Trinci-Lyne. “That felt like an affirmation of our design’s ability to instill a sense of stability and comfort.”
