10 Modern Homes With Living Trees Growing Inside

Nestled among Bali’s picturesque rice paddies, the Brutalist Tropical Home showcases the architectural creativity of Patisandhika Sidarta (currently with Sidarta and Sandjaja) and designer Daniel Mitchell. This home features expansive open-air areas and a staggered floor plan. A notable feature in the living area is a hammock for unwinding next to a tree that sprouts directly from the concrete flooring.

In the city of Yao within Osaka Prefecture, Japan, the Melt House stands as a slim dwelling where the owners tasked SAI Architectural Design Office with integrating nature into their living space. The architects designed a tall enclosed courtyard that can be enjoyed throughout the year. A tree, situated in a bed of gravel near a large window, enhances the illusion of being outdoors.

The Box House located in Araraquara, Brazil, is a creation of Caio Persighini Arquitetura. It features a striking contrast between its primary materials: concrete and cumaru wood. The wooden elements are strategically used to soften the harshness of the concrete surfaces, with a Jabuticaba tree planted at the heart of the home in a wooden inset within the concrete floor, serving as a natural centerpiece.

In response to the prolonged winters of Ottawa, LineBox Studio designed the Fold Place with an indoor tree garden located right next to the entrance. This not only greets residents and visitors but also provides a pleasant view from the kitchen, enhancing the indoor experience with a touch of nature.

The House in Kyoto, Japan, by 07BEACH, is cleverly designed with an open layout that ensures visibility of the children by their parents from virtually any point in the house. With neighboring houses closely packed around, the designers innovated by creating a tall main room with skylights that shower a centrally placed indoor tree with natural light, bringing a sense of the outdoors inside.

The Greenary, which encircles a towering 10-meter ficus tree, is a modern reinterpretation of a traditional Italian farmhouse by Carlo Ratti Associati. Situated in front of a large glass wall, the age-old tree basks in sunlight, while the house is equipped with advanced systems to maintain optimal living conditions for both the tree and its inhabitants.

At the 2019 Casa Cor Rio design fair, Natália Lemos and Paula Pupo unveiled Estúdio Elã, a contemporary apartment in Brazil inspired by the artist Ney Matogrosso. The design features terra cotta tiles against warm gray cabinetry, extending to a central kitchen island that includes a jabuticabeira tree at one end.

Perched in Lima, Peru, Casa Cachalotes by Oscar Gonzalez Moix draws inspiration from its verdant environment by incorporating an indoor garden beneath a double-height ceiling with skylights, allowing plants and a tree to thrive in abundant natural light.

The House with a Margin by yukawa design lab serves as their personal residence in Ibaraki, Japan. The home focuses on elements like light, wind, and greenery, featuring a double-height atrium with a tree that reaches the second floor, ensuring nature is visible from every interior angle.
