Renowned Jazz Artist Chuck Mangione Passes Away at 84

Chuck Mangione, a Grammy-award winning jazz musician known for his unique contributions to music and television, particularly on Fox’s King of the Hill, has passed away at the age of 84.

According to a representative speaking to People magazine, Mangione died peacefully in his sleep at his residence in Rochester, New York, on Tuesday.

Mangione achieved fame as a master of the flugelhorn and trumpet. He was a prominent member of Art Blakey’s acclaimed Jazz Messengers. He also enjoyed success as a composer; his soothing instrumental track “Feels So Good” reached the Top Ten on the Billboard charts in 1978. Mangione’s considerable talents earned him several Grammy awards, including one for his soundtrack to the 1978 movie The Children of Sanchez. In addition, he crafted the theme for the 1980 Winter Olympics held in Lake Placid, New York.

Chuck Mangione’s Television Persona

In a humorous twist to his illustrious career, Mangione took on a recurring voice role in the popular Fox animated series King of the Hill, starting in 1997. Portraying himself, Mangione became the celebrity face of the fictional Mega Lo Mart, often featuring his hit “Feels So Good” in episodes. His character appeared in multiple episodes, including the series finale in 2007. Demonstrating his fondness for the show, Mangione even titled a track “Peggy Hill” on his 2000 album Everything for Love, a nod to one of the show’s main characters.
