The Lowdown’s Kyle MacLachlan Says Working With Reservation Dogs’ Sterlin Harjo Felt Like Being ‘Back in the Land of Lynch’

During a recent press event for FX’s upcoming noir series, Kyle MacLachlan shared his experiences working with Sterlin Harjo, the creative force behind Reservation Dogs, and the legendary filmmaker David Lynch.

Harjo’s latest project, set to debut on Tuesday, September 23 at 9/8c with its initial two episodes, centers around Lee Raybon (played by Ethan Hawke), a self-styled “truthstorian” from Tulsa, Oklahoma. Lee, a dedicated citizen journalist, often finds himself in precarious situations due to his relentless pursuit of the truth. MacLachlan portrays Donald Washberg, a candidate for governor whose late brother has left a puzzling series of clues for Lee to unravel. As Lee delves deeper, he encounters not only Donald but also a grieving widow named Betty Jo (Jeanne Tripplehorn), all while trying to solve a recent death in the city and keep his struggling business running.

Reflecting on his collaboration with Harjo, MacLachlan recalled the unique and specific worlds created by David Lynch on Twin Peaks. He noted a similar sense of joy, creativity, and flexibility on Harjo’s set, where the script served merely as a starting point, with continual adjustments and enhancements being made. “The experience of being on Sterlin’s set felt reminiscent of the times with Lynch, which was very fulfilling for me,” he commented.

After MacLachlan’s remarks, Harjo humorously responded, “I can retire now.”

Harjo chose Tulsa as the backdrop for The Lowdown due to its gritty and secretive nature, which he felt was ideal for a noir setting. “Noir has explored cities like Los Angeles, New York, and New Orleans. Tulsa, with its rich history and political and cultural dynamism, seemed like the perfect setting,” he explained.

Ethan Hawke added to the discussion by emphasizing the strong community spirit in Tulsa, which he found highly supportive and genuine. “The authenticity and the palpable history of Tulsa contributed greatly to an enriching filming experience. It was truly one of the best experiences of my life,” Hawke shared.

Hawke also discussed the profound impact of his role, which centers on a character deeply committed to uncovering the truth, often at personal costs. “Being part of a narrative that so strongly values truth and journalistic integrity is incredibly important, especially in today’s world where these principles seem to be in short supply,” he said.

He continued, “With the state of journalism and storytelling today, playing such a role feels particularly relevant and gratifying. The Lowdown is not only about humor and love, but also about having meaningful conversations about our identities and societal roles.”

“The pursuit of truth is crucial, now more than ever,” Harjo added, underscoring the theme of the series.
