Designing a Functional Agricultural Business Hub
Operating an agricultural business comes with a set of needs that are considerably different from those of a typical urban-based corporation. This distinction often poses unique challenges for designers tasked with creating a facility that aligns operational needs with staff functionality across various departments.
When Impepinable Studio was selected to design a new center for the seed processing firm Agrosemillas, the design team decided to embrace the industrial context of the site. “The location is set in an industrial zone, and we aimed to integrate rather than disrupt the existing materiality, scale, and ambiance of the surroundings,” explains Gabriela Barrera, a co-founder of Impepinable Studio.
Architectural Innovation in Rural Settings
The new facility, located in El Peral, Spain, spans over 48,000 square feet and includes production and storage areas. Local artisans played a significant role in its construction, handling metalwork, carpentry, and plumbing, all tailored to cope with the dust-laden environment.

The structure incorporates four recycled shipping containers positioned on a concrete base that it shares with neighboring warehouses. The installation of skylights and a north-facing orientation of the open-plan spaces ensures a consistent and gentle natural light. The brand colors of Agrosemillas, green and yellow, stand out vividly against the neutral gray exterior, which features round windows equipped with manual shutters. These shutters function like simple levers, allowing the windows to be opened or closed as needed.
Strategic Layout for Enhanced Productivity
The internal layout is organized into three main zones in a grid pattern. The first zone houses expansive workspaces, the second includes various service areas, and the third contains meeting rooms and laboratories. Entry points are strategically placed to optimize the flow of logistics and efficiency. The interior design features oak cladding and furnishings that provide a warm contrast to the industrial steel frames. The roof is designed with sections for growing experimental crops, symbolically and practically linking research and production under one roof.
This dynamic hub is designed to be more than just a workplace; it embodies a reimagined approach to what a rural industrial workspace can be. “Our goal was to move beyond traditional office design and foster a creative exploration of space,” Barrera comments. “The outcome is a site that is spatially intriguing yet simple and orderly.”
