Throughout history, sheep have played a crucial role in the development of society, influencing everything from music and fashion to the fabric of culture itself. These animals have not only fostered community and industry but also supplied humanity with a vast quantity of wool across the ages. Nestled in the scenic Gower peninsula of southern Wales, an area celebrated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty by the UK, Delfyd Farm designed by Rural Office perfectly encapsulates and enhances its picturesque surroundings.
The farmhouse, originally constructed in 1895, was built using traditional Gower stone. Its basic rectangular layout features a porch designed to offer shelter from the elements. The property has been expanded with the addition of two new wings, consisting of four distinct sections. These extensions are unified by their vertical larch beaded cladding. The main house, facing south, includes Georgian sash windows that not only influence the building’s aesthetics but also manage the interior light and spatial dimensions.

The interior of the home is characterized by high ceilings that contribute to a spacious and open atmosphere. Despite the area’s harsh winters, it is crucial to maintain a warm interior. The design team at Rural Office prioritized environmental efficiency and thermal performance. Strategic use of the building’s north-south orientation maximizes solar gain which aids in cooling during the summer through vertical louvres and deep reveals, while red tile flooring helps maintain consistent indoor temperatures and offers easy maintenance against dirt and livestock intrusion.
The home’s east wing has been transformed into a gym, integrating seamlessly with the rest of the home through carefully chosen paneling and warm tile accents. The use of blonde wood and vertical mullions throughout the space adds a sense of lightness and clarity, defining different areas with both purpose and style.
Rural Office, based in the UK, is often recognized as a firm that embodies regionalism due to their deep contextual understanding in their designs. They place a strong emphasis on collaboration, working closely with locals who possess a profound knowledge of their environment—a knowledge that comes from long-term residence, keen observation, and active listening. Delfyd Farm is not only a testament to their architectural excellence, having won the RSAW Welsh Architecture Award 2025 and the RSAW Welsh Architecture Small Project of the Year 2025, but it is also a contender for the AJ Award for Projects Under £500k.
