Trina Turk’s Three-Decade Journey in Color and Design

Over the past 30 years, designer Trina Turk has become synonymous with bold colors and vibrant patterns. In her recent project with FLOR, Turk delved into her extensive archives to reimagine these designs for a new medium: flooring.

The process was more complex than just scaling up a design. Apparel and carpeting differ vastly in terms of design scale, and this collection creatively adjusts the pattern sizes and placements to transfer Turk’s distinct graphic style to room interiors. The collection draws inspiration from mid-century modern aesthetics, particularly the geometric shapes, bold colors, and the sense of retreat found in Palm Springs.

“Our goal was for the collection to be lively and bold, yet still practical and flexible for everyday living,” Turk remarks.

Exploring the Archive Through Innovative Designs

The collection features three distinct designs, each exploring different facets of Turk’s historic designs. The ‘Go With The Flow’ design channels the geometric spirit of Mr Turk with its flowing patterns, available in shades like Olive, Butterscotch, Black, and Coral. The ‘Midnight Muse’ design takes inspiration from radiating prints such as Turk’s Coppelia pattern, bringing their dynamic and layered hues to life in Berry, Fawn, and Navy. The ‘Easy Does It’ design opts for a more abstract path, utilizing subtle tonal changes and textures in colors like Tundra, Maize, Spice, and Turquoise.

The three distinct designs draw from Trina Turk’s archives, each reimagined for FLOR’s modular tile format.

Trina Turk finds FLOR’s modular tile format particularly compelling. The flexibility of the tiles allows them to be arranged into custom-sized area rugs, enabling bold patterns to be adapted to various room sizes and shapes, rather than conforming to standard rug dimensions.

“FLOR’s system is remarkably versatile and functional, yet it still supports a strong, creative vision,” Turk explains. “This collection encourages taking design risks within interiors, but in a way that remains accessible and feasible.”
