9-1-1’s Polarizing Death Could Be Part of a Scheme to Save Doctor Odyssey — Hear Me Out

What if I proposed that the tragic demise of 9-1-1‘s Captain Bobby Nash might be part of a larger plan? Indeed, it appears to be a clever plot by Ryan Murphy to give a new lease of life to Doctor Odyssey.

In the event you haven’t heard — and it would be hard to miss — 9-1-1 concluded its two-part "Contagion" storyline by shockingly killing off Peter Krause’s beloved character, a move Andy Swift from TVLine labeled as a "huge mistake."

But could there be a deeper meaning behind this shocking twist? Here’s my perspective: Peter Krause’s departure from 9-1-1 may be a strategic move to inject new energy into another of Murphy’s ABC shows, Doctor Odyssey, which is currently teetering on the edge of renewal or cancellation. Now, you might wonder, how could a character who is dead join The Odyssey? Allow me to elaborate.

If you follow TVLine regularly, you might be familiar with my Doctor Odyssey Fever Dream Theory. This theory suggests that the entire ship is a form of purgatory and Dr. Max is caught in a COVID-induced delusion. After scrutinizing fresh clues from Episode 15, analyzing death scenes for hidden meanings, and even getting input from star Joshua Jackson on the conspiracy’s plausibility, the pieces seem to be falling into place.

Assuming my theory is accurate — and I believe it is — it would be completely logical for Bobby to transit through The Odyssey as he moves towards his final rest. He might even linger to assist the crew as they navigate weekly calamities before making his ultimate transition. (And let’s be honest, Bobby would look fantastic in floral patterns — just take a look at our expertly PhotoShopped image above!)

And yes, we’re aware that Athena Grant from 9-1-1, portrayed by Angela Bassett, who is very much alive, made an appearance on the ship in March. However, considering this show is from the creator of American Horror Story, they undoubtedly have the creative means to make it work.

You might be thinking that perhaps Krause was just ready for a change in his career and chose this moment to retire his firefighter helmet. However, that’s not the case! Following Krause’s unexpected departure from 9-1-1, TVLine had a discussion with showrunner Tim Minear, who clarified that the decision to kill off Bobby was "entirely a creative decision," not influenced by Krause’s personal career plans.
