David Sweeney Has Left Cakes & Ale

    Decatur Metro | September 17, 2013

This is a couple of weeks old, but I haven’t heard anyone mention it yet.  From the AJC…

Chef David Sweeney confirmed today that he’s no longer working at Cakes & Ale.

“I’ve described my departure from employment with Cakes & Ale as peaceable,” Sweeney said.

…On Sundays, you can still find Sweeney at the Grant Park Octane Coffee, where he presents a weekly menu of  farmer-friendly “Fresh Market Bites.”

This is a shame, because I was in there at dinner time to collect a bag left behind by my daughter and the bakery dinner menu looked both delicious and affordable (not a word always associated with Cakes & Ale which is fairly priced but a splurge for sure). I will definitely be checking out a Sunday dinner at Octane. My family still talks about the delicious dinners and peculiar service at his old restaurant, Dynamic Dish. Some of the reports say he left to devote more time to a cookbook he is working on…

Heard the steady hand guys are out too. What’s going on? Still love Cakes & Ale, but I’m gonna miss those guys!

I’m not sure if it was when Steady Hand was still there, but recently I was rather dismayed to take my coffee cup up to the counter for a refill, only to be told I’d have to pay ANOTHER $3+. Refills used to be free. That’s a lot of money for a small cup of coffee! I’ve never had a problem with the bakery prices, but the selection recently has been not as much to my liking as it used to be. I miss the cake; they never seem to have it anymore.

Must say – i was never really impressed with cakes & ale. Perhaps this will be an opportunity for them to freshen up the menu.
