Intersection of Talley and Sams Street Closed This Week

Decatur Metro | July 22, 2013

talley

The latest temporary road closing!  Talley and Sams Street - just outside Public Works.  From the City of Decatur’s website…

During the week of July 22, the intersection of Talley Street and Sam Street will be closed for new road grade changes, installation of a new curb and gutter, and new paving into the entrance of the Public Works facility. The sidewalks will remain open at the Talley Street Lofts during this time period. However, the road will be closed around the clock the entire time. This work is scheduled to be completed as to not affect the school bus routes, weather permitting.

Discover the “Roadside Geology of Georgia” This Tuesday at the Decatur Library

Decatur Metro | July 22, 2013

This sounds kinda awesome.  From the Georgia Center for the Book…

Join us this for a family-friendly version of a book talk, and learnabout the geology of Georgia with author Dr. Bill Witherspoon and Dr. Pamela Gore. The Roadside Geology of Georgia is a fascinating and useful guidebook for all Georgians with an interest in the Peach State’s varied terrain. In 35 detailed and densely illustrated road guides, Pamela and Bill examine Georgia’s fascinating geology and reveal the stories that lie beneath the surface. From its shifting barrier islands along the coast to the sandstone ridges in its northwest corner, to the white whaleback of granite called Stone Mountain, this detailed volume with its engaging prose and 250-plus color photos, maps, and figures takes you beyond the rocks to unearth the billion-year history of the Empire State of the South.

Feel free to bring the entire family, and a rock or two from the yard, to this delightful presentation and we will learn more about the geology of our State, and the rocks that you bring with you! Rock ID clinic begins at 6:30 p.m. Presentation starts at 7:00 p.m.

We will have copies of book available for you to purchase and have signed by our guests courtesy of our friends at Eagle Eye Book Shop.

Cyclist Hit at Commerce and East College Last Thursday Survives

Decatur Metro | July 22, 2013

Gina wrote in late last week…

On Thursday evening on our way home we saw a bicyclist lying in the road on College Ave at the Commerce/Columbia intersection (In front of what was Citgo)

People were around him and calling for help… It looked pretty bad but I think it had just happened moments before.

This was approximately 8:45. I’m curious to know if the guy was alright. I have googled various phrases. What is interesting is that the intersections of College / Candler etc turn up as very dangerous to cyclists. As your blog has often hosted discussions around bicycle lanes, and safety for cyclists… I also think its interesting that we only hear about those individuals who unfortunately don’t make it and may not be seeing all the incidents of injury to cyclists.

We followed up with DPD.  Sgt. Ross reported back…

There was a vehicle/cyclist accident at East College Avenue at Commerce Drive Thursday evening. The cyclist received non-life threatening injuries and was treated at a local hospital. The driver was cited for failure to yield while turning left.
