Bike Traffic Skills Class This Coming Saturday
Decatur Metro | July 15, 2013Asst. Director of Decatur Active Living Cheryl Burnette sends in this announcement…
Decatur Active Living is partnering with Licensed Cycling Instructor Neil Walker to offer Traffic Skills 101 this coming Saturday at the Decatur Recreation Center. This class is designed to teach adult cyclists how to use a bicycle with confidence and competence for pleasure, utility and sport under various highway, climate, terrain, and traffic conditions. The class is organized into three levels: The Basics, Bicycling in Traffic, and Enjoying the Ride. Participants should bring their bicycle and helmet.
The class meets Saturday, July 20 from 10 am until 4 pm and is recommended for adults or children over 14 years of age. Cost is $50 and registration is at http://cyclesandchange.org/
programs/class-registration/.

Looks like a good idea, but who exactly licenses cycling instructors?
My mistake- should read that Neil is a Certified League Cycling Instructor, so not licensed but certified.
The League of American Bicyclists certifies teachers. Check it out at bikeleague.org.
Class # 1: Spandex is not always your friend.
Okay, so Decatur felt very small town yesterday. After asking my above question and getting a response, I became inspired to get my circa 1985 Schwinn up and running and headed over to the bike shop. While in there, a woman comes in and asks if she can hang her flyer in the window. I noticed her Decatur nametag… Cheryl Burnette!! The same woman who only minutes before had answered my question online. I introduced myself and we had a good laugh.
Yup, and if you were taking Decatur 101, you might have just seen her speak and if you had a kindergartener, they might have just done an expedition to her office. The small town aspect of Decatur is awesome and we rarely venture into the sordidness of Peyton Place or snarkiness of middle school. I like to think we’re kind of like Cicely, Alaska in Northern Exposure but DM has replaced the disk jockey role.
It was nice meeting you Keith, and now you are no longer anonymous! Glad to see we inspired you to get your bike fixed up and ready to ride. Maybe you will join us on the BIke Decatur second Friday bike ride. Next one is August 9- a social five mile-ish ride, then a stop at a local watering hole.
Cheryl, is there a source for consistent info on the scheduling of these rides? Wondering if I could even keep up on my beach cruiser (with handlebar tassels, of course).
We post them on both the Decatur Active Living and the Bike Decatur FB page as well as on beactivedecatur.com.
Just so y’all know: Cheryl also introduced the Decatur Wine Festival. Just sayin’. Great public servant.
we’re fortunate to have so many great public servants in Decatur. Peggy Merriss and Hugh Saxon also come to mind, based on my personal experience.
Does anyone know if “children over 14 years of age” incorporates 14 year olds who are 14 years and 3 weeks? does it mean 14 and older? or are they seeking 15 and older?
My 14 year old just got back from the course. While others had paid, he was the only one who showed up and so he had a private lesson for the entire day. He said he learned SO much about bike safety and bike competence. He learned all kinds of tricks while actually on the bike such as how to safely navigate debris in the road, what to do if a car cuts you off, etc. He even learned how to fix a flat. Neil was a very enthusiastic, experienced, expert instructor. Thanks, City of Decatur and Neil!
