What’s Your Favorite Cheese for the Money?
Decatur Metro | May 28, 2013![]()
Cheese is one of those rare foods that has a both massive and ardent following.
What are your favorites? A big national brand like Cabot? A local cheese like Sweetgrass? An import?

Kraft Singles because they get the pills into the dog without a hassle. For me, an Irish cheddar is wonderful.
your dog is less suspicious than ours.
love lots of different cheeses, but for the money, Trader Joe’s Sheep’s Milk Gouda rocks my world.
another good money play are the ash covered goat milk rounds YDFM regularly discounts. if you like goat milk cheeses, 20% off those babies makes them a screaming buy.
For the money, I am also a big fan of Trader Joe’s. The New Zealand grass fed cheddar is my favorite of the TJ’s lineup.
For cheddar, I’m sentimentally biased towards Cabot cheddars because I can remember when you bought them locally off of a cloth-bound wheel. They’re a bit different now and I’m still trying to figure out the new-fangled ranking of aging/sharpness/flavor–extra sharp, seriously sharp, vintage choice, aged reserve, and private stock. It was easier when you walked into a small market or gas station and just asked for a 1/2 lb. off the wheel. (Don’t ask me why cheese was sold in gas stations but it was, before rural gas stations all became 7/11s.)
In Ye Olden Days of Yore, the best cheese was a slice of hoop cheese from a fruit stand over on East Ponce near North Decatur. David’s Produce over on Lavista still has hoop cheese, I believe.
Jarlsberg, boys and girls.
reypenaer is the brand, aged gouda, the older the better.
I miss Eatzi’s horseradish cheddar.
Costco has a nice horseradish cheddar. It is a BIG hunk o’ cheese, but might do as a replacement!
Tillamook Baby Loaf!
Sharp cheddar and boursin. If I had to pick one, it would be cheddar.
Dill Havarti from Patak Meats in Austell. I’m not sure what brand it is, or if they make it themselves, but it’s delicious and cheap. I also don’t remember the exact price but, to put it in perspective, the fresh sliced turkey breast that it pairs so well with costs $2.49/lb and is better than the $7/lb Kroger or $9/lb Boars Head stuff. I usually go there with two coolers for my haul, but I never leave the parking lot without first “taste testing” some garlic salami, pastrami and turkey breast with a few slices of the dill havarti.
Humbodt Fog from Cowgirl Creamery rocks my world! Close runner-up–the Dutch Parrano at Whole Foods, which is like a cross between a really sharp aged Gouda & a Parmesan. Both are sublime!
+1000 on the Humboldt Fog. Also love the Cotswald from WF as well.
D’oh! Glad you spelled it correctly–I didn’t even notice I’d left out the “l”. *sigh* Decent speller, crappy typist…
My favorite cheese is probably “Starship Troopers.” It doesn’t get much cheesier than that.
Sartori BellaVitano is my favorite cheese. I love the one soaked in Merlot, but I also like the balsamic one. YDFM has is for $9.99/lb which is a great price compared to $17.99/lb at Whole Foods.
Bad traffic usually costs me money…I’m glad the north to south evening ride on I-75 generally runs well. When it doesn’t, I exit at Howell Mill and head to Start Provisions for a leisurely session with the cheese monger. I’m terrible at remembering names, and the “for the money” aspect may not apply, but I love a good blue cheese and they have many to choose from. Also, an ooey gooey soft rind cheese is so good. I’m also a fan of good Gruyere and a raclette meal with it melted over small potatoes is something I haven’t had in a long time but am now suddenly craving. Thanks DM.
The Brick Store sells a wonderful raclette. there is still time to get one tonight.
If price is no object it would be Maytag Blue. Maybe a giant wheel from YDFM. But realistically a nice white Vermont sharp cheddar – Cabot.
in honor of this totally random discussion about cheese, and inspired by the gentlemen in the photo above staring at stacks of it, i bring you perhaps the greatest three and a half minutes in cinematic history: “Markets of Britain”
I want to go to market in Britain. what fun.
mini emus
hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
YDFM carries Hook’s cheese in different varieties, which is a premium brand that is reasonably priced. If I may digress b/c YDFM only has very bland provolone, can anyone recommend a place, like a good Italian deli, where you can find a wedge of tangy provolone cheese?
Coon Brand with a PBR.
Am I allowed to make a food request post for some point in the future when you run out of best for the money ideas?
We need some sandwich ideas to break the monotony of turkey and swiss. Anyone have anything interesting and easy? Different bread (homemade?) or homemade garlic mayo?
Also, olive oil? What’s the best you have used? I’m willing to splurge on that.
I thought we had done an olive oil post a while back, but it looks like it never got out of draft mode. That’s a great idea. Sandwich options are also a good topic. Will put those up soon!
Love this thread.
My husband just discovered a delicious cheese at YDFM. I’d describe it as a cheddar blue cheese. Blue Shrophire Waxed
The happy hour special at certain upper Midwest taverns when I was in college (back when dinosaurs roamed the earth): a schooner of beer, large bowl of homemade soup, and all the pot cheese & crackers you could eat, all for 90 cents. It was a particularly good value compared to what they were serving up in the campus dining hall at any given time.
