Best Meal For Under $10 in Decatur / Atlanta Area

Decatur Metro | February 26, 2013

Why $10? Well, us humans like round numbers so it’s a little less intrusive than “best meals for less than $8.34″.

Anyway, rambling sort of morning. What are your fav meals around Decatur and Atlanta that ring up at less than $10? I believe they are popularly referred to as “cheap eats”.

4-side veggie plate, no bread + 1/2 sweet 1/2unsweet tea at Our Way Cafe gets you in under $10 and makes your momma proud.

Delight Your Palate Caribbean shack on E. Ponce (just after Dekalb Farmer’s Market and just before N. Decatur) has a super yummy $4.99 fish and chips deal. And I still love going to Taqueria for some cheapies. That three dip chip plate is wonderful.

Any combo of pho and ba mein at Lee’s Bakery would fit the bill. Heck, I think you can get 4 sandwiches for $10.

Lee’s Bakery for Pho and Banh Mi combo. Can not be beat and darn hard to finish. $8 with tip

El Rey De Taco – ridiculously good and cheap, lunch is like $6

Empanadas & Tacos at Buford Highway Farmers Market. Yeah, I know I talk about em all the time, but they are that good. 4 for under $8

Zestos for Chili Dogs and Corn Dogs

Village Pizza in Chamblee for a slice and salad – $9

Las Brasas- 1/4 white chicken Peruvian style. Side of pinto beans.

El Ray Del Taco (Buford Hwy)- any assortment of the $1.60 tacos or $1.00 mini-tacos. Some adventurous options on the menu. Worth the drive to Doraville.

Mom’s Quesadillas- available from a Buford Hwy apartment kitchen- I’ve taught/coached three students from this family and the mom makes extra money by selling $6.00 quesadilla plates to folks in the apt. complex. Really good. Limited availibility. Appt. only.

Business Lunch Combo at Mediterranean Grill. Shish Kabob, Kufta Kabob, Gyro meat, rice, salad and pita bread with tzatziki and hot sauce plus a fountain drink. It’s up to $7.60 now. I remember when it was $5.95, which just means that I’m old and have been eating there a damn long time now. Still, it’s a great deal for really good food.

And since Brad mentioned the tacos and empanadas at the BHFM, I don’t need to…

Shut up! Enough people know about this already, we don’t need to be turning new folks on to it, at least until they finish the major expansion which will hopefully include a larger cafeteria ;-) It’s true, though. The food is really good. And if you can eat $10 worth of it, your name must be Joey Chestnut.

I think this would be a better poll if we stayed inside the City limits:

ANDRYANNIS GREEK BISTRO CAFE offers remarkably fresh and chef-authentic fare for under 10 bucks.

+1 on Las Brasas. And when they run out of chicken (frequently) , we head to Burnt Fork for takeout — get an equally-as-yummy organic BBQ whole chicken (costs more than LB, but still under $10 pp).

Outside Decatur, SOUTHERN SEAFOOD on Lawrenceville Hwy fed two of us with fresh humongous steamed shrimp for around $10! (don’t order spicy, you’ll regret it). SS is also a unique cultural experience.

Coyotes in Avondale is another cheap date. The Lunch Fajitas is an amazing well-under-$10 deal. The basic menu is.. well basic. We love the Mariachi’s on the patio on warm Friday nights sipping cheap frozen margaritas. Swooning to “Besame Mucho”, you’ll pay no attention to all the HFC in the margarita mix.

Everything Brad said but with a few additions below…

Willy’s – insanely inexpensive and good for the amount of food you get. It’s a family staple for cheap, tasty eats.

Quac Huong – the other Buford Hwy bahn mi spot. Sandwiches range between $2 to $2.50 depending on the meat choice

Las Brasas – someone mentioned it already but I love the food and the family that owns it and felt they deserved another shout out.

    Victory

    Las Brasas -

Whoops! A little quick on the draw there! Anyway…

Victory Sandwich was surprisingly reasonable and very good when we tried it recently. Of course, you’ll only come in under $10 if you avoid the excellent cocktails and out of this world jack & coke slushies.

The Taqueria Del Sol “Blue Plate Special” is always great and usually less than $10 (it was today).
Lots of tasty inexpensive things on the menu there if you can resist the margaritas.

In Decatur, I frequently crave the chicken salad melt at Brick Store. Paired with a side of pasta salad it comes to 8 bucks. Even better, pay a bit more and get a cup of sweet potato curry for the side.

Outside Decatur, most of Com’s wonderful entrees are under 10. My favorite is the bun with lamb grape leaf rolls. But the real highlight here is the VIetnamese salad with shredded mango, papaya, and apple. Top it with your choice of meat (or not) and it’s a fresh, healthy meal for 6.95.
Stick to the Buford Hwy location though; the prices are higher at the one in Dunwoody.

Looking through these, it’s interesting that only person picked breakfast (if “Chinese breakfast at Steinbecks” is in fact breakfast ). The Eggs Benedict on a biscuit that Pastries a Go Go does on weekends tempts me like little else in Decatur. I get it with a fresh fruit cup (bowl really) so feel less guilty. $8.50.

Java Monkey has AWESOME panini sandwiches (full sandwich plus side) for $7.50. The husband is a big fan of the Cranky (chicken, cranberry, etc., I believe) — and I am a regular orderer of the Bella Prosciutto (apples, honey, prosciutto, cheddar, basil aioli). Mmmmm. We liked our first taste of Victory Sandwich Bar but actually think Java Monkey’s sandwiches are better — and cheaper!
