Re ending OWL: How do we know this guy isn’t against OWL trying to make them look worse? Either way, blame the nutjob with the gun (and maybe the overly permissive gun laws in this state), not the movement. Same goes for the tea partier with the AK a few years ago.

You do realize that openly carrying an AK-47 is legal, right? Staying in the park after closing time is not.

I guess I’m just feeling a little defensive the last few days, between this, and the recent walmart post, where someone’s “big concern” was whether or not the new walmart would be selling guns.

I personally think we’d all be much better off if, as a community, we were used to seeing law-abiding citizens openly carrying firearms so that there wouldn’t be the “OMG I can see a gun” reaction that seems to be more and more prevalent.

          Got that right.

Many times those trying to push a group to extreme actions are undercover “provocateurs”. It has been proven that the FBI employed and/or encouraged many of these in the 1960’s antiwar movement and throughout the civil rights movement. These guys with the guns however are probably just stupid.

It is interesting however that no Tea Party rally was shut down despite threats to the president and members of congress and people showing up with guns.

Man, I hope that Obama doesn’t turn into a Lyndon Johnson.

A rally and an encampment are a little different. Are you sure that no Tea Party rally was shut down?

      • Josh says:
        October 27, 2011 at 2:03 pm

Apparently the big difference was that the Tea Party organizers made the mistake of asking:

The Wisconsin governor admitted to considering doing such a thing with the union protestors there, but didn’t because he was afraid it would backfire–not because it would have been wrong. I’m surprised that didn’t get more attention. True, it was unethical journalism that caught him out, but he came across as just as slimy and corrupt as the widely reviled Blagojedvich.

Once again a man legally carrying a gun peacefully ends an illegal situation.

No Mr. Walrus. It is a lie on all accounts.

Perhaps you could point out the lies instead of just claiming them.

Who is this guy, really, and why did he really bring an AK to Woodruff Park? Police need to get answers to that if they used this guy as their reason for clearing the park.

The 11Alive story at the link doesn’t show the guy’s face (which is pretty strange) and accepts his word that he was there to support the protest. Was he? Did anyone at the protest ask for a guy to show up with an AK?

These are all valid questions, and the commenter at 11Alive who used Foxnews links to try and claim this is some lefty-commie-obama-fascist-kenyan conspiracy doesn’t answer the important questions.

I did not see the gun and I was not there. Many people I know where there and they all said the gun was fake. Two said they actually touched the gun and said it was a plastic toy but it looked realistic. Draw your own conclusions. Given the big ramp up we have seen this week on right wing attacks on people exercising their constitutional rights (as opposed to being paid to demonstrate ala Koch Bros millions paid to the Tea Party “supporters”), I have drawn my conclusions. I guess I am a 65 year old hippy. Shoot me.

        • The Walrus says:
          October 27, 2011 at 3:24 pm

Hahahahahahahahaha!!!!! Speaking of attacks on people exercising their constitutional rights, did you happen to pay attention to how people (at Occupy Atlanta) were verbally attacked and drowned out by the occupiers when they dared say anything they disagreed with? I guess you did not. I just love how liberals love open minds and differences among people……….as long as they agree with them.

“Did anyone at the protest ask for a guy to show up with an AK?”

First off, if you believe this is truly a leaderless movement, who exactly would you expect to invite him. Secondly, walking around with a gun is not illegal, however camping in the park is. Lastly, if the police simply used this guy out of convenience as an excuse to clear the park of the criminal campers then I would call that a brilliant and peaceful solution. Beats tear gas and billy clubs if you ask me.
