How is this even a debate? Harry Potter all the way.
Potter, of course. You’ve got Twilight in the wrong weight class.
You may be correct, but this is the most common comparison I know of.
How about this instead:
Twilight v. Hunger Games?
Potter v. Narnia?
Potter still wins, of course
Oooh, good idea. I like Potter v. Narnia better! No reason why I can’t change it.
I love them both, but I have to give the edge to Potter. I don’t compulsively re-read Narnia…
as much as i love narnia, i agree with kristend. i reread potter again and again.
Based on the number or rereads, Narnia blows Potter out of the water – I am atually rereading Narnia right now for the umpteenth time. Granted, in my mind they are completely different series (genre, style, purpose, message),
movies – Potter FTW
books – draw. Potter is amazing, but nothing can replace the memory of my mother reading Narnia to me when i was 4 years old
No contest. Narnia hands down.
Twilight is for 11 year old girls.
Harry Potter is a badass.
Okay, wait. So now its Potter v Narnia?
Dang. Much harder.
The Potter movies are MUCH better, but the Narnia books are better. (Although that is probably my Christian upbringing not allowing me to answer in complete favor of HP) If you take out the religious part of it and my dad reading Narnia to me as a kid, I think Potter is a bit more intense, with deeper characters and more action. I go Potter.
Both are nauseating.
So, His Dark Materials vs. Lord of the Rings?
LOTR. Though it was a few years ago, I recall thinking Dark Materials was rather disjointed and uneven.
True about Materials; I have serious philosophical issues with Lewis, and just plain literary distaste for Rowling.
(If you get a chance–and haven’t yet–check out Roberto Bolaña, excellent stuff: The Savage Detectives and 2666)
I like Dark Materials despite it’s flaws but the movie – blarg. LOTR wins easily against DM for movies or books.
Potter v. Narnia is much harder. Think I would vote Narnia for books, Potter for movies.
It will be interesting to see how Potter holds up over time – Narnia has held up I think, at least it has for my kid. (But we also love reading James Thurber stories so may be not a good measure of current kids!)
its, not it’s. dang.
Thank you, Bijoux404. I regard knowing the difference between it’s and its as way more important than whether one prefers Lewis or Rowling. I re-read both.
Here’s the deal with the apostrophe: It’s never used to form plurals. It’s often used to form the possessive, but NOT in the case of the possessive of “it,” which is “its.” Think of “his”, also a pronominal possessive but WITHOUT an apostrophe.
Thanks Sharyn, I agree with you that it’s important to know these rules. I should read for typographical errors before hitting the send key. DM keeps its comments, so it’s impossible to get them back to correct once sent.

Dark Materials: I support the right to arm bears.
Both of there are wonderful, but if you are looking for something new to read to your child then I must recommend The Mysterious Benedict Society series.
Potter. I’ve tried Narnia as a kid and again as an adult and it has never worked for me. I always get a kick out of how Rowling plants these word time bombs; I like to picture a kid running into a word like umbrage, or dumbledore, or snipe, later in his reading life and then having the Potter story come rushing back to him.
Potter!
Narnia…loved those books SO much as a kid! But Baker’s right: the Potter movies are way better than the Narnia ones. Dangit.
+1
From a teacher stand point – Harry Potter all the way. Kids don’t love the Narnia books like they used to. But I’ve never seen a series make kids want to read like HP.
From a personal stand point – Harry Potter. JK Rowling is nothing short of genius. Every time I reread it I see a new angle, new evidence of foreshadowing, a new play on words. They are entertaining, smart, and just wonderful! Narnia is also great, but I’ve never sat down and ignored my kids for a weekend to read the next Narnia book.
Narnia – but like Potter very much too!
Narnia is for a younger age set than Potter. That’s just one of the many ways in which the series are totall different.
As an adult fan of both series, I gotta go with Potter. The Narnia books are awesome, but the characters are not as well written as the ones in Potter. We don’t get to know the Narnia kids as well.
The Narnia series ended with a dud. The final book spends too much time on new characters, doesn’t have anywhere near the movement or excitement as the preceding books, and it preaches way too much.
The Chronic (WHAT?) cles of Narnia…
Ha! +1

Lazy Sunday is awesome.
