    Decatur Metro | April 16, 2011

    From Be Active Decatur…

Join us for the 41st anniversary of Earth Day and a great chance for members of the community to come together and participate at the city’s OFFICIAL Earth Day Party!

    The event is absolutely FREE!

Location: Oakhurst Garden, 435 Oakview Road, Decatur, GA 30030

    Time: 1-4 p.m.

Parade: Come as you are. Dress up your bike. No cars please. Or watch from the sides. Line up starts at noon in downtown Oakhurst. If you are walking in the parade, join the group from noon-12:30 p.m. to claim your spot. Parade begins at 12:30 p.m. in Harmony Park (East Lake Drive/Oakview Road) and walks down Oakview Road to the Oakhurst Community Garden Project.

Kids Crafts: More than 15 crafts will be offered to the kids.

Vendors and Raptors!: More than 25 businesses and non-profits will be on hand. Learn about a new organization or purchase a plant!

    Music on the Mainstage:

    2-2:45pm Hill Roberts

    3-3:34pm Nancy Kaye

Food Vendors: Popsicles, coffee, baked goods, sandwiches, and more yummy food

Cake Contest: We hope you are baking an Earth Themed cake! All ages, no restrictions. Drop off between 10 am.-noon at the Oakhurst Garden’s house, 435 Oakview Road, Decatur, GA 30030. Please leave your name, telephone number, and age. Families, groups, and individuals are welcome to submit. Judging occurs at 1 p.m., winners announced at 1:30ish from the stage, and the cakes will be served to the public at 2 p.m.

New this year is a Community Phone Book Recycling Project sponsored by PitStop. Bring your old phone books to fill up a portolet! Let’s see how many phone books we can fit in there! Your phone books will be used by Patterson Services to grind with clean wood and send the byproduct to Visy Paper. Visy Paper uses what they receive from Patterson Services to produce bio fuel.

Earth Day T-Shirt: Winner announced at 1:30 p.m. from the stage. T-shirts for both kids and adults featuring the winning design are available for purchase.

The 2011 The Sally Wylde Cultivating Life Award recipient will also be announced on the bandstand starting at 1:30 p.m.

The Earth Day event is offered free to the community by Latham Home Sanitation, the Oakhurst Community Garden Project, the City of Decatur, the City of Decatur Environmental Sustainability Board, the Waldorf School of Atlanta, Oakhurst Cooperative Preschool, Agnes Scott College, and PitStop.

I believe that the grand prize winner in the t-shirt design contest is the daughter of a fairly regular DM poster… ahem…6th grader Dorothy Owen. A proud father couldn’t resist. Way to go, girl!
