CSD Tuition Process Open for Month of March
Decatur Metro | March 2, 2011Assistant Superintendent Thomas Van Soelen writes in to let us know that the City Schools of Decatur have opened their tuition process for the 2011-2012 school year to interested non-CSD residents during the month of March.
If you’re not a resident of the city, but wish to enroll your children at CSD for $611/month, CLICK HERE for instructions on how to navigate the process.
Of course there is this caveat…
It is difficult to predict if specific grade levels or programs will have any openings. Tuition applications will be accepted for all grades Kindergarten-grade 12. All applications will be processed using the criteria described below.
If I remember correctly, since all the Elementary Schools were at capacity this past year, few if any tuition students were accepted. But perhaps the 4/5 Academy opening this fall will change that for the coming year.

I sent this news to someone I knew was considering applying. They replied:

THANKS!
My husband went down to the Decatur Admin offices on March lst at 5 am and
waited in line to apply. He was #7.
————————–
5 a.m., #7 — Whoa! Guess I’m lucky that I had no idea it was like that.
According to Dr. Edwards’ superintendent report for the next board meeting, there were 7 people in line at midnight.
Lines are so archaic. Accept all applications and then hold lotteries per school/grade level, as needed.
Question: Does anyone know if tuition students, once accepted, are eligible to finish out their education in Decatur (provided they pay, of course)?
6 out of the first 10 people in line were there for 9th grade. The other 4 were for 1st or Kindergarten. There was only one person in line at midnight. The rest trickled in around 5 A.M. or so.
Brian, all students have to re-apply, including employees of CSD. There are no guaranteed spots, but returning tuition students usually have priority.
These tuition kids are accepted only if there is space and no additional teachers or resources are required to be hired.
The projected tuition revenue for the upcoming year is $750,000. The state portion of the students allocated funds follow the student. These state funds are very significant, depending on the allocation from the home school district. The total combined money that CSD receive is well over a million dollars per year. These monies enable CSD to not have to raise local taxes in a shrinking economy.
Also, these tuition students are required to have good grades, attendance, and discipline reports. By adding these tuition students, CSD has been able to improve the results and image of Renfro.
Ouch. I am fairly certain it is not the tuition students who have improved the results and image of Renfroe (which I can spell correctly, by the way).
Ouch. Sorry, my kid has not attended the middle school and now I know it’s Renfroe. Thanks for the lesson. I’m good on knowing the difference between Clairemont and Clairmont .
The comment about tuition students helping improve Renfroe Middle were made by CSD employees at the 8th grade high school transition meeting. I am sure that is not the only factor, but it has made a positive difference.
Does CSD raise taxes? I thought the city did that and not the school system itself. Please someone correct me if I am wrong on this.
I can’t believe that with trailers in our schools we are even considering this. If you want your kid to go to Decatur city schools move to Decatur. If you want to pay tuition look for a private school.
Trailers, what trailers? I only see learning cottages.
Off topic.. I noticed on the Superintendent’s report that K-3 wills start 30 minutes earlier next year and will go for a full 7 hours like 4-12. That’s pretty tough on the little guys!
Does anyone know if the $611 is per child or per family?
@LSS – it is per child, per year.
well, i had NO idea that applications were accepted on a first come, first served basis. that is absurd and archaic, as noted above. chances of getting our daughter into 9th grade next year are slim to none now, but had I known more about the process, we would have had a shot. /end rant.
on a slightly different note, does anyone here know how many tuition students are typically accepted at DHS each year?
Are the chances really that low? I think some folks sign up but then pick other options. I knew a family last year that signed up for DHS, Druid Hills, Paideia, and somewhere else. In the end, they went to Paideia.
