Fox Brothers’ Big Tex Cantina Construction Photo

Decatur Metro | March 25, 2011

We’ve heard – and seen a lot – of the construction underway at the former Eurasia/future no. 246 space on Ponce lately, but not much so much blogoverse chatter about the coming Fox Bros.’ Tex Mex Cantina coming to the old Natalie’s Fish House location.

Well, here’s a pic they posted of their bar-area on Twitter yesterday.

Decatur’s Wins Second-Place in Marathon Neighborhood Challenge

Decatur Metro | March 25, 2011

CANDLER PARK!!! (Shakes fists at the sky)

After taking back the top spot in the “neighborhood challenge” during last year’s ING Marathon, Decatur again must bow to its formidable in-town rival: the dreadfully motivated “Candler Park”.  From the Publix Marathon website…

2011 NEIGHBORHOOD CHALLENGE WINNERS ARE:

Division 1 – Marathon/Half Marathon Course

1st Place – $1,500 – Fourth Ward Neighbors/4th & SAND

2nd Place – $1,000 – Poncey-Highland Neighborhood Association

Division 2 – Marathon Course

1st Place – $1,500 – Candler Park Neighborhood Organization

2nd Place – $1,000 – City of Decatur

But seriously, congrats to the Candler Park folks and to Decatur for bringing home $1,000!  As mentioned on The Decatur Minute, this cool G will go towards the city’s “Walk There, Decatur!” program.

Decatur 2010 Census Map! (Courtesy of the NY Times)

Decatur Metro | March 25, 2011

Over on Fresh Loaf, Thomas Wheatley rightly points out that the brand-new census maps put up on the New York Times website are a total time-suck.

Zoom into Decatur’s city limits and check out how the city’s population has changed in the past 10 years.  From a look at changes in the city’stotal population #s (map above), to racial make-up, to density, to vacant housing, the map tells a not-so-surprising story about Decatur over the past 10 years.

As you can see from all the blue in the map above, populations grew in each of Decatur’s four census tracks except for what can loosely be described as the southeast Winnona Park tract.  The largest growth (+10% to 20%) was seen up in the northeast tract.

The largest change in racial make-up, not surprisingly, was seen in the southeast Oakhurst tract, with the white population more than doubling since 2000 (+113%) and the black population dropping 47%.

And when it comes to vacant housing, only the southwest Oakhurst tract had fewer vacant properties than it did in 2000.

Anyway, enough from me!  Check it out and let us know what else you find.

Race you! Oakhurst Cooperative Preschool invites Decatur Metro readers to register to win free admission to this year’s Beat the Street for Little Feet, Saturday, April 23, 2011

What’s blue and fast and fun all over? Pete the Cat! The iconic mascot of the Oakhurst Cooperative Preschool 5K run is back to announce the details of this year’s event. The 4th Annual Beat the Street for Little Feet will take place in Kirkwood on Saturday, April 23, 2011 at 8:00 a.m. This year’s 5K route starts at Coan Park and will take runners through the beautiful and historic neighborhoods of Edgewood and Kirkwood. Race t-shirts will feature the Pete the Cat graphic displayed here and are certain to become collector’s items, so be sure to register as a phantom runner if you cannot attend the race.

In keeping with the spirit of Oakhurst Cooperative Preschool, Beat the Street for Little Feet is one of greenest and most family-friendly races around! In addition to the 5K run, the race will offer a stroller division, one mile race and fun run for kids. Compostable cups will be provided to all runners, and special efforts will be made to collect any compostable and recyclable waste generated by the event. In addition, the school will be facilitating a Nike re-use-a-shoe drive in conjunction with the race. A special door prize also will be reserved for a participant who makes an effort to be green on race day, either by carpooling, taking public transportation or bringing a pair of shoes for recycling. Following the race, Oakhurst Cooperative Preschool will be putting on a fantastically fun children’s party plus a wind-down runner’s expo, all at beautiful Coan Park.

Register now at www.ocprace.com!  Oakhurst Cooperative Preschool is offering $2 off of 5K and phantom runner registrations for anyone who uses the coupon code DMETRO before Thursday, March 31th.  We also will pick one lucky Decatur Metro registrant and will refund their entry fee, so register now and treat your family to an unusual, fun, healthy, community-focused event!
