Record Number of Residents Volunteer for Decatur’s MLK Work Day
Decatur Metro | January 19, 2011From the AJC’s recap of this past weekend’s three days of volunteering…
Saturday through Monday, a record 1,220 volunteers participated in the 9th annual Decatur Martin Luther King Jr. Service Project.
“What you basically have here,” said Project Chairman James Matthews,“is a good old fashioned barn raising.”
Volunteer coordinator Lee Ann Harvey is one of three people who created the Service Project, beginning in 2003. Although a smattering of volunteers are highly skilled fixer-uppers, most, she said, are “unskilled laborers.” Many come from school or church groups, businesses. Some volunteer individually.

She would probably try to deflect the praise but I gotta say it. What an asset we have have in Lee Ann! Congratulations on another great event to Lee Ann and all the volunteers. Thank you.
Several boys and parents were there from Cub Scout Pack 175. Whoever brought the vittles has our thanks!
Over 100 Girl Scouts from the Decatur Service Unit made 500 sandwiches for volunteers on Monday. Thanks Girl Scouts!
Participated for the first time, just one of the many reasons I love living in this neighborhood (Oakhurst), real sense of community. Will be the start of an annual event for me..Great job on organizing…
Decatur High boys lacrosse (40+ strong) is the unofficial winner in the “Largest Volunteer Group” category. Most Productive? Maybe not – but had a good time!
What a great example of neighbors helping neighbors! The MLK Service Project is one of the many reasons why we moved to Decatur and why I grow to love this community even more every year.
