Last Day of Decatur MLK Jr. Service Project – Volunteers Still Needed!

    Decatur Metro | January 19, 2015 | 10:14 am

Decatur’s Lifelong Community Coordinator LeeAnn Harvey wrote in late last night…

MONDAY is the last day of the Decatur Martin Luther King Jr. Service Project. We have a lot of important repairs of our senior citizens’ homes that we would like to complete. We have a shortage of carpenters and skilled volunteers. We would love your help! If you’re available or know someone who is, the volunteer shifts are 9am to 1pm and 1pm to 5pm. Volunteers meet at the Solarium, 321 W. Hill St. in the Oakhurst neighborhood of Decatur (30030). We’ll have breakfast, lunch and dinner available. Information about the Project is available at http://www.mlkserviceproject.com. Call Lee Ann Harvey at 770-652-8593 or email .

Thank you for being a Decatur Volunteer!

Record Number of Residents Volunteer for Decatur’s MLK Work Day

    Decatur Metro | January 19, 2011 | 5:02 pm

From the AJC’s recap of this past weekend’s three days of volunteering…

Saturday through Monday, a record 1,220 volunteers participated in the 9th annual Decatur Martin Luther King Jr. Service Project.

“What you basically have here,” said Project Chairman James Matthews,“is a good old fashioned barn raising.”

Volunteer coordinator Lee Ann Harvey is one of three people who created the Service Project, beginning in 2003. Although a smattering of volunteers are highly skilled fixer-uppers, most, she said, are “unskilled laborers.” Many come from school or church groups, businesses. Some volunteer individually.
