What’s Open In Decatur Today/Tonight? – Tuesday Edition

    Decatur Metro | January 11, 2011

I hope I won’t be creating these all week, but this seems a good use of our time during Atlanta’s 2011 snow siege.  I know we went through this exercise yesterday, but circumstances change and I’m sure that some businesses open yesterday might not be open today and vice versa.

So, what businesses do you know of in the Decatur-area that are open today, Tuesday, January 11th?

Thinking Man Tavern was not open last night. Pretty surprised about that. But Oakhurst Village was hopping, though the Matador and Saba were both closed.

Yes, but after about 6:00-6:30 it was for libations only. Steady crowds throughout the day had used up all their food.

Saw an item on Fox 5 news this evening about the Marietta Diner. Made a big deal of how it was open in this weather, and staff were heros, etc.

Thought it quite funny, as all I could think of was the sister Decatur Diner, and how it’s not even open in normal weather!

Any idea if Lil Kroger is open and how the roads are? Need milk and eggs was going to walk to Hop n Shop but figured I would ask?

Little Kroger was open yesterday and said they were staying open until 7pm. I went around 4:30. I drove up there from Talley St and Commerce on that little hill was a bit nightmarish – but going 15 mph and tapping the breaks helped. They only had one register open and I waited in line for quite some time, but everyone was patient. I imagine if they managed yesterday, they will be open today, but slow.

      • Steve says:
        January 11, 2011 at 10:03 am

Open would not necessarily mean stocked. Suppliers have the same road issues as everyone else.

The little Kroger was open yesterday. We walked there. Ponce & Commerce were really icy though. Parking lot was very slippery too.

Baby Kroger opened at 7 am today and closes at 7 pm today. Lawrence was manning the sole register when I bought some food at 9 am.

At 11:00 AM Tuesday, Lil Kroger was open, well stocked and well manned. Sidewalks are slippery as hell so be careful out there.

Correction: everything at Commerce Square appears closed *except* CVS (not so much the drive-thru, though). Cooks Warehouse and Ruby Tuesday are closed. Thumbs Up has plenty of tables available. I’ve never seen more people walking on Marshall St in my life; seems to be the popular pedestrian corridor for folks returning from Baby Kroger.

City Schools of Decatur closed tomorrow too. This is getting old. I have a bad cold, work piling up, and kids who vary from ebullient to cranky. Could we perhaps use the school buildings as some kind of combination child-care, cabin fever relief, enrichment program if we parents volunteer to rotate in running it? Other people’s children always listen to me better than do my own.

      • Steve says:
        January 11, 2011 at 8:09 pm

I would imagine a lot of the decision to close schools has to do with the conditions of the streets and not wishing to have people out on them, so opening the schools for other reasons wouldn’t work for that reason. Otherwise, they could just have school anyway.

        • karass says:
          January 11, 2011 at 8:22 pm

Completely agree that we don’t want teachers and staff who mostly live outside of Decatur having to risk the drive to school. But WE Decatur families can all walk there! Safe routes through the snow to school! Walk, sled, or ski! Of course, I’m being facetious but I would love an alternative to the kids being cooped up at home, learning being postponed, and parents getting behind in work that will have to be done eventually, probably at the expense of family time during evenings and weekends. And I imagine that at least some of these snow days will have to be made up in the school schedule….we don’t want to decrease the number of days of instruction that our tax dollars buy. I would propose that the budgets of either CSD and/or the PTAs/PTOs include salt for the bus routes to school but that won’t help the teachers and staff who live in other parts of Metro Atlanta that are clueless about how to make their roads passable.
