    What’s Open in Decatur Today/Tonight?

    Decatur Metro | January 10, 2011

    Judy writes in…

Is there anyway for you to gather [info about] who is open for us Decaturites?

Chris Billingsley reported in a few minutes ago that both the Baby Kroger and the Church Street Animal Clinic were open as of this morning.

Has anyone else been around downtown and can report back?

Highly unlikely that The Marlay House will open today. Not enough crew live within safe walking distance (yet).

I don’t think the mail ran today–did it? If not, that would be the first time I remember it not running due to weather. Rain, snow, sleet, hail, nothing stops the US Mail!

        • karass says:
          January 10, 2011 at 9:34 pm

Nope and no newspaper either. OSHA put the kaibosh on that neither rain, nor snow, nor sleet, nor hail stuff. I think I saw the Decatur Post Office open but that might have just been people going in to check their boxes.

          January 11, 2011 at 8:57 am

There were several times when we lived in Virginia that the mail did not run.

Kavarna in Oakhurst was open early this morning. I stopped over CVS an hour ago and was closed. Be careful driving out there!

And who has a backup generator if/when the power goes out during the game tonight?

      • KG says:
        January 10, 2011 at 5:49 pm

If you see someone in an Auburn sweatshirt sprinting toward the square looking for a place with a tv on because my power went out, that’ll be me.

        • J_T says:
          January 10, 2011 at 6:00 pm

Just remember, Brick Store may be open but they won’t be letting you watch no stinking tv!

I’d head west of the square and run straight to Taco Mac first if they are open.

There’s two guys sitting in the front booth at Decatur Diner so I assume it’s open as usual.

          Is your workplace not closed?

          • Julesag says:
            January 10, 2011 at 7:52 pm

If it’s anything like mine, the physical office is closed, but there’s an expectation to work remotely. Tell that to my 3-year-old … Darn internet …

            • karass says:
              January 10, 2011 at 8:23 pm

Exactly! They say to be safe but come in to work if at all possible and work remotely if you can’t come in. Well, a lot of work and meetings cannot be done remotely. But deadlines and work expectations aren’t changed. So one pays in evenings and weekends for snow days.

    27. Chris Billingsley says:
      January 10, 2011 at 5:14 pm

This will get old real quick. I remember my first year, 1976, and we had four days of close to zero temperature. CSD made the decision, along with most systems in the metro area, to close for the rest of the week. For a first year teacher, I thought that was pretty cool and headed to the mountains. But in the good ol’ days, most school systems had to make these up! Losing part of spring break was bad but the worst part were two Saturday school sessions. I believe we only had to attend until 1:00 but talk about a miserable bunch of students and teachers, especially me.
I don’t know who it was that discovered that little calendar trick where the state did not require a system to make up all snow days but but whoever you are, bless you.

Chris, I remember cooking scrambled eggs on the gas grill in 1973. I think it was 7 days without power.

Yep, that was October 1995 after Hurricane Opal. I had an 8-week old and my house burned down that week. I remember it well. :)

                January 10, 2011 at 9:34 pm

Ooooh. And I thought I had it hard being exceedingly pregnant at the time. You win!

                January 10, 2011 at 10:23 pm

Opal in ’95 was bad, and made even worse by the fact that I lived in Harwood condos at the time. Part of the complex was on the same grid as Emory, Yerkes and the hospital so they had power restored within hours (or at least that’s what they explained to us). The rest of us were out of luck for about a week. We threw one hell of a prolonged hurricane party though!

On the train heading downtown decatur. Apartment complex streets where too icey, had to walk to station. Sounds like we might luck up and find something open. Anyone know if Baby Kroger is still open??

      • Bo says:
        January 10, 2011 at 6:10 pm

Little Kroger is open but it sort of feels like the Star Wars Bar. “He doesn’t like you. I don’t like you either!”
