Buying Your Christmas Tree From a Local Organization
Decatur Metro | December 2, 2010
Nubbs wrote in a couple days back…
We need to buy our Christmas tree and want to support one of the local organizations do you happen to know what organizations are selling trees this year and where?
And while we’ve already mentioned First Christian’s annual sale that started Monday, there are certainly other local orgs out there selling trees this year. Like the ever-popular Winnona Park Elementary Annual Tree Sale this Saturday starting at 8am, which Juan reminded me of in an email this morning!
Where do you get your tree? Anyone have other local org options for our good friend Nubbs?

Boy Scout Troop 103 sells Christmas trees every year in the parking lot of North DeKalb Mall.
I second Boy Scout Troop 103! They are great!
anyone know how much they are? I’m all for buying local, esp from scouts!
You don’t need to go to North Dekalb Mall. There is a Boy Scout troop that sells trees behind the church at East Lake and 2nd Ave.
There’s a certain Decatur elementary school that is selling freshly cut beautiful trees from Banner Elk, NC tomorrow morning at 9:00 AM.
Fresh wreaths, baked goods, and hot drinks will also be available.

I guess when a principal tries to post something here two minutes before dismissal, he may spell “school” incorrectly.
Yikes!
I just assumed you were writing in a Scandanavian language!
That’s one of the oldest scout troops around. Their tree lot behind Oakhurst Presbyterian Church is open on weekends from now ’til… actually, I don’t know when. They also sell wreaths.
Thanks! I knew about the church, but Hubbs is Jewish (yes, we still do Christmas and a tree – and he did growing up too) and he prefers we do not buy trees from churches, so Boy Scouts or schools it is. Same goes for not buying pumpkins for churches….
Hope to make it to Winnona in the morning. If not, Boy Scouts here we come! This is baby’s first Christmas – so we need a tree!
Oh, that’s right! So, how you & Baby Nubbs doin’, chica?
Great – thanks for asking. Baby Nubbs is a pretty good baby – I got super lucky.
Oh, even better if Winnona Park sale is Saturday – we should be able to make it. Friday morning was going to be rough as it would be just me and the baby trying to get the tree home. Hubbs can help on Saturday. Yippee!!
And when a principal posts just before dismissal he seems to skip a day, as the sale is the day after tomorrow! I know in school day terms it is tomorrow but…..;-)
I’ve sung their praises before, but we’ve gotten our trees at Winnona Park for three years running and they’re some of the fullest, freshest Christmas trees I’ve ever had. It’s not unusual for us to keep our tree up through the end of January and even after almost two months these are still green, supple, and holding their needles. Last year it was still drawing water. Crazy.
Prices are very reasonable too. You’ll pay less at Lowes or Home Depot, of course, but you’ll also be getting a tree that was cut ages ago and the money goes into corporate coffers rather than to a good cause.
I’m a great fan of Winnona Park’s trees and I’ve bought many a great tree there. Plus the friendly parent atmosphere is great. However, I have to also give a plug to First Christian Church only because they will also deliver and put the tree in your stand. There are times when that added feature tips the scale. While the kids thrill to the site of a tree on top of a minivan, it gets old….
What kind of wreaths does WP sell? Is there garland by the foot/yard? We usually go to Pike because they have nice trees plus all sizes of the mixed wreaths and garland, but it would be nice to stay in the neighborhood and support the school that, according to any of the three proposed attendance maps, will be ours next year!
