It’s the preliminary test fit of the place settings. After a few more test fittings and final measurements, the place settings can be preliminarily placed on order before final ordering of the final place settings. Once they arrive, well….we’ll see, but it’s one step closer to opening.
If they can’t get it together to open a restaurant in six months what makes you think they”ll be able to keep it open. Or serve decent food. Smells like somebody’s tax write off.
The negativity around here astounds me! These folks are awesome. The Marietta Diner rocks. Yes, they’ve been delayed, but 90%, if not 100% of that delay has been due to City Code and licensing problems that were out of their control. I, for one, will be ecstatic when they finally open.
J_T,
I am not the best when it comes to researching the delays at the diner. Could you give some insight as to what the problems have been? What is the code violation? What license does a diner require that is different from all the other restaurants in the area? I did hear about a stop work order…was that county or city issued?
From what I understand, there were a bunch of problems left over from the former tenant. Then, at least one large issue with the water/sewage that they had to wait for the city to fix. I used to own a small business in the city so I know it can be frustrating. I don’t know any more specifics about the Diner’s situation, but I’m willing to give them the benefit of the doubt after eating at their other location many times.
Thanks J_T. Those types of details help make real sense of the delays. Not simply some hold up due to a one-of-a-kind, gold-leaf, marble three-basin dish-sink being sailed over from Italy.
Yup, that Jeep is definitely going to cause a problem. Pretty sure if you check code you’ll find that only Prius are allowed into the actual dining section of a restaurant within Decatur city limits. Oh, and seeing-eye Subarus.
To all the naysayers: give it a rest. Scuttlebutt has it that these folks encountered a lot of delays due to problems with the property itself (underground pipes, etc.), so the City couldn’t & wouldn’t give them a CO until those were all cleared. Regardless of whether the Diner will be your thing after it does finally open, don’t let’s kick them while they’re down. Give ‘em a break, you Penny Dreadfuls!
Thanks for that insight cubalibre! I didn’t know the delays were related to physical deficiencies with the building. Delays make more sense now, this wasn’t a simple remodel and open.
I must have missed all the details earlier.
Hey, if I could eat a Ruben, I would– since I can’t, the Tuna Melt’s my comfort sandwich of choice. Not a fan of matzo ball soup, so you can have that all to yerself! I’ll be showing down on the mile-high Mounds cake…
I don’t know about anyone else, but I’m totally willing to forego my posting anonymity for a Decatur Metro Decatur Diner Meet-Up when then finally open. Can we get enough people to cover 24 hours and all 874 menu items? Who’s in?
They’ve been paying rent on that place for months… I’m sure they have been wanting to open and start making money as badly as some of us have wanted them to!
I am sorry, but that place is so hideous. Why could they not have made it look just a little nicer – I mean, really. I plan to boycott the restaurant because it has made an eye-sore of that corner!
With all due respect, Ren (and others who’ve complained), “hideous” is in the eye of the beholder. Personally, I like that exterior. It’s distinctive and fun and brings some pizzazz to the streetscape. And now that it’s come in for so much sniping from self-appointed arbiters of taste, I really adore it. Let’s not take ourselves too seriously, eh? Besides, I’ll take bright blue faux marble any day over some of the painfully–indeed, excruciatingly–bland storefronts that grace other parts of our fair town.
Man, if I’d boycotted all of the ugly restaurants I’ve encountered, I’d have missed out on some good food! I’ve gone into some dives that had the best vittles I’ve ever eaten, and gone into some places with “tasteful” facades that served some ranky, stanky, nasty chow.
As an avid connoisseur of excellent food from some of the sorriest looking, soul food spots in Georgia, I must say “amen” to that! You don’t know what you are missing.
The Decatur Diner reminds me of a deadbeat dad that keeps promising to take his kids to Disney World but never quite gets around to it. And he has a habit of wearing really distasteful Hawaiian shirts…
I am so excited to finally be able to give my kid a piece of the cake that he asks for every time we walk by the mural. My big problem with the mural has not been it’s taste-fullness, but that it makes promises I can’t deliver!
From the comments section (here and elsewhere) I learned how to boycott a restaurant 1) based on looks, 2) if someone has ever smoked in the building, 3) if kids are present, 4) if kids aren’t present, 5) they take too long to open, and 6) if their health score is anything less than 100.
(Yeah, I try to take all unsolicited advice to heart!)
Will they use the same fork, knife and spoon when the open in two weeks, I don’t want to eat off utensils that’s been on the table that long. Also, if they city was holding them up, don’t you think they would have been on all the blogs talking about it. I believe it’s on they end.
You could ask for fresh utensils.
Not exactly in their own best interest to jump on the blogs and bad-mouth the City–they’d never get all their permits in order. Besides, from comments above it sounds like nobody’s fault, just difficulties with obstacles that came with the building. City folks just doing their jobs (I like to think) and restaurateurs doing theirs. (Didn’t I hear or read they were opening yet another location at the same time?)

Hah!
The guy told me, DEFINITIVELY, that he’d be open either before or after Thanksgiving. Remember, you heard it here first.
I must be dense…I don’t see what in this picture indicates that the Decatur Diner is closer to opening.
I think it’s the place settings which are new.

I’m quivering in anticip……..

It’s a new concept-dusty spoon diner instead of greasy spoon.
This information is so exci….zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
How did they get a jeep in there??
It’s another code/licensing problem …
Yup, that Jeep is definitely going to cause a problem. Pretty sure if you check code you’ll find that only Prius are allowed into the actual dining section of a restaurant within Decatur city limits. Oh, and seeing-eye Subarus.
A lot of other places have opened in Decatur in that time period. How come only these folks have problems with the city?
Maybe someone from the city should chime in?
Woo-hoooo! Tuna melt, here I come!

Dibs on the Eggplant Parm!
I’m ready for some mousakka!

haha maybe i’m in the minority but i love the look!
granted i live on a street with neon yellow houses with neon orange trim and love it!
…you big baby!

Books…covers…don’t judge…etc.

Yep, it’s ugly and is an eye-sore!
The Decatur Diner reminds me of a deadbeat dad that keeps promising to take his kids to Disney World but never quite gets around to it. And he has a habit of wearing really distasteful Hawaiian shirts…
woah woah woah… i have a different Hawaiian shirt for every day of the week… what are you saying?
I was explaining to my 11 y.o. daughter the importance of having Souvlaki available at 3:00 A.M. I am so excited!! And I love how the diner looks.

I can’t believe I just read every one of these posts.
Have you learned as much as I have?
