MARTA To Conduct “Full Scale Police Exercise” at East Lake Station

Decatur Metro | November 5, 2010

I’m sure we’ll have to reference this post again on November 20th, but just so many of you are aware ahead of time, Decatur Mayor Bill Floyd passes along this announcement from MARTA officials…

MARTA will conduct a Full Scale Police Exercise at the East Lake Station and surrounding area on Saturday, November 20, 2010, in coordination with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Atlanta Police and Fire Departments, and Decatur Police and Fire Departments. These annual training exercises provide the opportunity for the MARTA Police Department (MPD), MARTA staff and other emergency response agencies to practice response and recovery operations during a simulated situation.

DHS Football Reunion Recalls Dominant Team of a Different Era

Decatur Metro | November 5, 2010

There’s a great piece in yesterday’s AJC recollecting the Decatur High School’s impressive football team from the 1950s and profiling some members of the reunion celebration scheduled for this evening at 5:30p at DHS.

Now in their late 70s, once again they will shake loose the cobwebs of distant, and for some, rapidly dimming memories of those back-to-back state championships. More than that however, as they line the field before Decatur’s game against Lovett, they will offer a tangible link to an era that has almost vanished.

“We played in leather helmets, no face mask,” said Bob Reed, a starting guard on the 1950 team.

DHS teacher Chris Billingsley sends along a note letting us know, who will be participating…

Guard – Ken Creuser and wife 1949 team End/Kicker – Butch Dowman 1949 team + Bill Craig and wife

Tackle – Frank Givens and wife 1949 team Guard – Jimmy Moss and wife 1949 and 1950 team Halfback – Dick Popwell and wife 1949 and1950 team + Joyce Chambers

Quarterback – David Redford and wife 1949 and 1950 team

Guard – Bob Reed and wife 1949 and 1950 team Fullback – Al Finley and wife 1949 and 1950 team

Decatur ArtWalk Tonight

Decatur Metro | November 5, 2010

Prior to tomorrow’s Decatur Wine Festival, the Decatur Arts Alliance is holding an Artwalk this evening from 5p-10p around Decatur, much like the one prior to the Decatur Arts Festival (except the weather is slightly cooler and the leaves on the trees are a bit more colorful).

The details and a map of participating locations can be found in this lovely PDF.
