Large Tree Limb Falls Across Nelson Ferry Road
Decatur Metro | August 13, 2010This large tree limb fell at the corner of Nelson Ferry and Coventry Road yesterday afternoon, closing the intersection for a couple hours. Luckily the limb fell into the street and avoided hitting any vehicles.
In true Decatur style, Assistant City Manager of Public Works David Junger was on the scene, along with a number of firefighters who blocked off the street with some “Warm Zone” yellow tape.
The above pic is mine. But Meridith also sent in a few pics of the action a little later on when the branch was cut up. Check ‘em out after the jump!

Who allowed this to happen?
I demand answers.
It is a problem.
I’ve spent over $1000 this year on dead and dying tree limb removal. It’s been a rough few years for trees. If you find out who is responsible, I would like to have a word with them.
Along those lines, we have a silver maple that is in the waning stages and I’m looking for recommendations for a replacement. I’d like at least a 50 year tree and something that has some seasonal visual interest. Ideas?
I always find Walter Reeves’ website very helpful for local gardening and tree information. He has a section on shade trees.
The best part of this branch brou-ha-ha was that there wasn’t any traffic on Coventry for a few hours! Yeah yellow hazard tape!
Great Caesar’s ghost, that’s a danged big tree!

Dang that Sir Isaac Newton!
With an aging urban forest it is time for the City to invest in a full time arborist to indentify hazard trees, do tree review for new construction, oversee proper street tree planting, and indentify planting spots in the right away for future canopy. It would be an investment, but one well spent given the benefits (traffic calming, retail, energy, air, stormwater, beautification etc.) and costs (failure) of trees.
That’s a great idea
What’s Tom Coffin doing these days?
Perhaps beer festival grant money could pay for trees ….who’s up for forming a nonprofit?
