Taqueria del Sol Looks Beyond Georgia
Decatur Metro | July 20, 2010
A press release went out about this a month or two back. Looks like the AJC finally found some time to do a little recon…
This year, Taqueria del Sol established a wholly-owned subsidiary to franchise the brand. The plan is to slowly and methodically expand outside Georgia, aiming for five new openings next year and 40 within the next five years.
…The plan is to start opening new restaurants next year in southeast and East Coast cities such as Knoxville, Philadelphia, and Birmingham, where Burnett says he has the most contacts. The parent company will retain the rights to Georgia in case Klank chooses to open new restaurants of his own.
At one point, I heard that Charleston would get the first TdS franchise, but perhaps things have changed since then.

They have done well in Athens, though we miss Adrian, who moved there to beome their manager. A unique dining experience; good luck to them.
Well, better than selling out to Raving Blands, I suppose.
But it does make me a little concerned. Franchising rarely improves a restaurant concept, and frequently destroys what made the original special.
Re: Raving Brands — they already have the worst possible incarnation of the taco/burrito joint: the horror that is Moe’s. Buying Tacqueria would go against all that Raving and Moe’s stands for: selling absolute crap and making you feel like a fool for ordering it. Where else can one experience the kind of utterly forced “welcome” greeting that awaits customers at Moe’s, worsened only by having to use the stupid, contrived names they’ve come up with for “burrito” and “taco.” I mean, WTF is a “Joey Bag of Donuts” and what possible connection does it have to a burrito?
Selling decent quality tacos with meat that doesn’t come from cans? Moe doesn’t know that.
Meat cans! YUM!
Actually, Raving Brands sold off the Moe’s chain a year or two ago.
Well, kudos to them for dumping that horrible excuse for a restaurant. In case you can’t tell, I hate Moe’s.
Good to see that Decatur’s chief export will be rudeness to customers. Viva Decatur!
We could certainly go around the mulberry bush again regarding the acceptability of TdS’s customer service, but one thing that can’t be argued is TdS didn’t originate in Decatur.
So we can’t export it. In fact, we’re importing it as we speak!
Dude, get over it already–once, some college student was rude to you–they were probably hungover…never been there, uh?
Get over what? It is what it is. Check out yelp if you think I’m the only one with that opinion.
Luckily, I can swing a dead cat and hit 15 other taco joints that will actually let me sit down and stay awhile, so it doesn’t bother me none.
Actually, the most egregious instances of rudeness I’ve witnessed have come from the owners.
seems to me that Moe’s branding is one long — and old–Seinfeld joke.
Chipotle’s remains my favorite for drop-in tex-mex stuff.
the taco nazi will spread his unkindness throughout the usa.
