What’s In Store for Cynthia Wong’s “Bakery/Dessert Bar”?
Decatur Metro | June 12, 2010“Bakery” is sort of an anomalous word in the U.S. It can really suggest a store that sells anything from fresh loaves, to a gamut of oven options, from savory to sweet.
So I know everyone’s been wondering what precisely will be sold at Cynthia Wong’s upcoming “bakery/dessert bar”, which will open next door to Cakes & Ale’s new location on Sycamore Walk (Yes, I just made that street name up.)
Good thing John Kessler’s got his nose to the ground and his pen to the pad! Here’s Wong’s response during part of a short interview Kessler did with her for an up-and-coming chef’s list, put together for yesterday’s AJC…
I’ll bake croissants, sticky buns, scones and bagels fresh every morning. I’m really excited to get back to my bread-baking roots.”
Is that all? “No. I’ll make eclairs, freshly baked and filled. Buttermilk layer cakes. Chocolate bundt cakes. Oatmeal cookie and marshmallow ice cream sandwiches. Ice cream birthday cakes to order. Cake and jelly doughnuts and cupcakes — people can say both these things are “overdone, ” but to me there is no such thing, as long as it is tasty.
and the most important question is: When is this wonderful place going to open?
Good question. I thought the original plan was fall, but being that there isn’t any sign of the existing businesses moving, that seems optimistic. It sounded like a pretty big remodeling project that’ll have to take place once the three existing occupiers vacate?
Actually, the Metro PCS has moved (to where the wig shop used to be next to Bada Bing) and the sub shop is closed. Both businesses have brown paper over their windows as well. And the benches that used to be in front of the giant brown wall are gone. Progress!
Wow! I quit my regular MARTA commute for a week, and completely lose track of what’s going on….
Wong says “late fall” earlier in Kessler’s interview.
Oh my!
“Cake and jelly doughnuts and cupcakes — people can say both these things are “overdone, ” but to me there is no such thing, as long as it is tasty.”
Amen, sister! Sounds like my kinda girl. I’ll be a regular patron, for sure.
That sound you just heard was my head exploding.
Where is this going to be located exactly? And if I wanted to park and run in for a goody, where is the closest place?
Corner of Sycamore & Church. You can conveniently take MARTA, park on Sycamore, Church, or in the paid lot off Church next to Johnny’s Pizza.
I hope they will have just plain bread too! we need a good local place for bread in Decatur…
Amen to fresh homemade bread.
heard it would open late fall. seems there are some big “issues” that need to be corrected with those spaces before they can get going. i sure wish they could stay where they are and expand over into the empty space next door….wonder why that deal can’t work.
Landlord won’t let them expand into the empty space next door–crazy. So to expand, they have to move.
Perfect. I can walk up to stuff myself with delicious bread items on weekend mornings, then right back to the Yogurt Tap in the afternoons for a dairy complement. Good thing I will be walking…
With Button Cakes gone, (as well as Taste, which sold the fabulous Cookie Studio cupcakes) we desperately need good cupcakes in downtown Decatur. You go, girl! (Just hold off until I finish my diet!)
May we have more bread, please.
Bread Bread Bread! (Oh, and all the other stuff too)
Yes, we’re still working out some details but we will have fresh bread for sale and also sandwiches on our house made bread for lunch. We are very excited about the bakery and the expanded cooking capabilities this will give Cakes and Ale with the addition of a wood burning oven!
