« First Baptist Youth Yard Sale Begins Today How the Decatur Book Festival Feeds Its Authors »

Alright, I’ve been waiting all week to ask this question. I posted it on last week’s FFA, but I was too late. Sadly, I have to remove a dying tree from my back yard. Can anyone recommend a good tree removal company?
Richmond Tree Service did a great job for me at a very reasonable price.
Pat Lombardo at 678-362-1914.
Not strictly a Decatur topic, but did anyone watch the “Atlanta’s Missing and Murdered Children” special on CNN last night? Wednesday marked thirty years since Christopher Richardson, 11, went missing on his way to the pool at Midway Park (his body was found six months later in East Point). I played baseball at Midway back then, and I was the same age as Richardson when he disappeared. I seem to remember the police searching the wooded area around the park while we were playing a game. A scary time.
Earlier this week, I drove down the street Richardson lived on, Conway Road, and then drove through Midway park. It looked exactly the same as I remembered it (except, of course, smaller-looking, especially the ball fields).
Atlanta, and Decatur, have come a long way since that time. No one could argue that race relations haven’t improved significantly. Watching that special last night, though, brought back memories of a time when blacks and whites in Atlanta seemed to live on different planets. I’m very thankful for how much has changed.
I don’t think you meant to do this, but this topic may have shut down FFAF for the week. My question about “Did Agnes Scott do any screen on the greens this year?”, doesn’t seem so important anymore.
I guess I’d say I’m also glad relations seem to have improved since that awful tragedy. Hope it continues and would like to see our President drive this more, though I am honestly not sure what I mean by that exactly.
I think race relations HAVE improved a lot, most DEFINITELY since I was in highschool and college (1960s). People seem to “talk to each other” more now, whereas in the olden days, people just avoided looking at or speaking to persons of another racial group unless they were communicating service requests, work assignments, etc. Nowadays, there seems to be a more genuine basis for real communication above and beyond that which is only “necessary,” and I think that’s good, and that it’s “for real.”
For All Seasons Tree Service is great. They have done a wonderful job for us and many of our neighbors. 770-736-7070
Thanks RED!
I need to have some rotten siding replaced. Eventually we’ll need to replace all of the siding but right now we just want to replace the siding that’s completely rotted out. Can anyone recommend a reliable and affordable handy person who does small jobs?
John Barnes is fantastic. He’s done a bunch of great work for us and I’ve never heard anything but rave reviews from neighbors who have used him.

Thanks Handy!
Does anyone know if the Fifth Earl is going to return? I thought I saw a building permit on their window yesterday. I didn’t know if it was for their restaurant or Trackside. I REALLY wish Fifth Earl would return to Decatur!!!!
I just WISH I had kept a paper copy of their menu, so I could try to replicate approximately their tremendously wonderful sandwiches. But everything there was delicious. The desserts, etc. I feel lucky that they ever existed and that someone pointed me over there before the big burnout. Please come back!
I still have a paper copy Chira. What do you want to know?
oakhurstgirl: last I heard, it didn’t sound promising. The owners wouldn’t rule out a reopening, but it was going to take a perfect storm of the right location and the energy to start from scratch to make it happen.
Wow! Lucky you! Could you present a screen shot of it, so I can print it off for a keeper? If anyone has a photo of the interior, ANY view(s), I would love to see those too. Can we create a “virtual Fifth Earl” on this blog to dream about??
FYI to Chira – the 5th Earl menu still seems to be online:

JC – muchas gracias!!!! oh my… i can try to replicate some of these for myself!!!
DM: I’m not exactly sure how to word this but is there a way to make the Recent Comments scroll-able? I tend to only go back in time to read or post for as far as the Recent Comments listed. I’ll bet others do the same. That’s usually ok but if there’s a huge flurry of comments over a short period of time and/or I lose connection for a day or two, I end up missing posts just because I don’t have an easy way to go back in chronological order to where I last left off.
I guess this request reveals my addiction to this blog–I don’t want to miss a single comment because if I do then……??????
Does anyone plan to attend the second public hearing on the proposed city budget on June 21? Only two residents commented (positively) at the first one (June 7) and I heard that no one showed up at the previous meeting when it was presented to the city commission. And only 8 people posted an opinion on Open City Hall. (BTW, city staff are thrilled with this result as it apparently represents a greater than 1000% increase over past participation.) One could take this to mean that despite words (whining about high taxes at round tables), actions (not providing specific input on the budget or showing up at the public hearing) indicate that everyone is basically happy with the way things are.
DM, I propose a new rule: No more wah wah about high taxes if not more than 20 residents (.1%) bother to comment on the city budget. So, only 10 to go. Prerequisite: everyone needs to read it first. Available on the city website.
Every year there are also a series of City sponsored focus groups that meet to look over the budget, which are likewise lightly attended. An, the budget was the topic of an Open City Hall topic this year.
only seventeen comments? are we tired of the blogs?

Aqua diner!
Rum & cupcakes for everybody!!!
Generic negative comment on someone else’s generic negative comment.
You talkin’ to me, Gibbetties? (And no, I’m not Robert DeNiro.) No cupcakes & rum for you!
I love the diminutive–mexicana reference–pero no, había dirigido todos.
!Salud!
Confession time, Decaturities. How many of you actually make an effort not to stop between the white lines in front of the fire station? It seems like every time I try to leave the space open, someone behind me gets busy with his/her car horn, trying to get me to move forward.
Uh, oh. The fire station on Trinity? I don’t remember those lines. Maybe I’m not stopping properly. Luckily I don’t cross the tracks that way often.
NOBODY stops outside those lines at the fire station…every time I go to turn out of the little driveway next to it (shortcut from the library), there are cars there! But maybe I just want them to follow the rules for my own benefit…
Would you want the fire station blocked if your house was on fire? How much faster will you get to your destination if you block the fire station? Not many people respect crosswalks either.
Every time! Seriously!
Yes, I respect the lines every time too.
One problem with those white lines is that they’re too far apart for drivers to recognize the extent of the “no-stop” area. Area probably needs road striping, signs on both sides of the street, and maybe even overhead signage.
Does anyone else think Yogurt Tap closes way too early? 9:00? 8:00 on Sundays? Even 10:00 on weekends is too early. In the summer, dinnertime often isn’t until 7:30 or 8:00, leaving no time to walk to the square for dessert before 9:00! And whenever I have been there right before closing, it is still packed, so I’m sure they would still be busy that extra hour or so.
I think they should open before 12, at least on weekends and especially during the festivals.
Ditto for Dancing Goats. Every time we walk home from dinner and pass it, it’s closed. What ever happened to a coffee after dinner?
Yeah, I think they close at 7. Two other coffee places in town are open much later.
Thanks to DM participants, I have mustered the courage to DISCONNECT CABLE and stream my TV via the internet! My plan is to purchase a desktop PC to use it exclusively for my new “media center.” Brand name desktops are too costly – can someone recommend a local service that (or who) can build one for me?
Good luck Trudy! I still haven’t had the nerve to pull the plug myself, truth be told.
Oynx has a foundation that sells rebuilt computers and donates the profits to charity. I’m not sure they’ll have exactly what you want, but if you’d like to talk to someone about building a computer, I’d probably start with them.
No TV since 2009. I’m doing fine getting all the news I need, some of it live-streaming when big events and Presidential speeches/news conferences occur, on my computer screen. No cable fees, yay!!! If I want to watch a sports event in toto, I just go to a sports bar and love the atmosphere and other amenities offered there. Es no problema!
Ate at Farmstead 303 over weekend and enjoyed it. Because of the heat, there was a long wait for the seats inside but it was pleasant sitting on the porch in the shade in the evening with a slight breeze. Just a few bugs near the end. Our family especially enjoyed the hush puppies, fried chicken, creative gazpacho, and banana brulee ice cream dessert. The pimento cheese was darn good considering that we don’t even like it as a rule. Only the French Fries weren’t to the kids’ taste.
All Decatur Heights neighbors are invited to take part in a Sycamore Drive Traffic Calming Meeting this Thursday evening. Bring your great ideas for improving our main street!
