    Decorate Decatur Decidedly

    Decatur Metro | December 15, 2009

    205 adair

    One of last year’s winners

The city’s Cheryl Burnette writes in reminding us that the judging for “Decorate Decatur” is just around the corner.

On Sunday December 20th, a set of anonymous judges will troll the four square miles of Decatur and decide who among the decorated homes and businesses deserves the coveted House Cup…I mean Commissioner’s Cup.  (The cup itself is so coveted that it was quite a struggle to get the cup away from last year’s winner.)

Other homes and businesses will also be declared winners and though no cup-honors will be awarded, they will receive braggy signage.

And if your neighbor is asking you to help them get guaranteed attention from the judges (or you just have a favorite house), call 678-553-6573 and leave the address.

Disclaimer: Decorate Decatur does not encourage residents or non-residents to decorate property which is not their own.  Decorating your neighbor’s property without permission may result in a termination of friendship, a lack neighborly hellos at the mailbox, or gaudy retaliation.

This display was much more awesome at nighttime. A daytime picture doesn’t really do it justice.

Decorating with the “More is more” mantra….

I vote for Clark Griswold’s house.

Thanks for posting Nick. The judges are ready to see some great homes, and yes, Karass, they do look better at night. Unfortunately the night photos don’t come out as well.
This home actually had steam coming out of the train!

Decorating your neighbor’s yard with their permission, however, is great fun. My yard decor has expanding this year, so two of my neighbors have adopted my reindeer and my Christmas cow. (Yes, the train is mine.) I’d probably decorate the whole block if I could, it’s just so much fun.

Tip for those of you who want to get some good night-time photos – turn off the flash on your camera and use a tripod or some other steady base like the hood of your car.

Which hood has the best lights for cruising with kiddos after supper? Perused through Great Lakes and Winnona the other evening. Great Lakes was a clear winner.

I’ve never found a particular street in Decatur which is clearly ahead on the “pizzerias” as we call wonderfully ostentatious light displays in our family. There’s just lots of great surprises all over. Some of the most unexpectedly impressive light displays are on Clairmont Road outside of Decatur, on the section of Clairmont that is past LaVista but before Briarcliff. The houses there have become modest by Decatur standards but the huge lawns full of light displays are remarkable.

There’s at least one good one on Kings Highway. It may even be someone who posts here’s house…

Cruise down E Hill Street for some fun light displays.

I haven’t seen 2nd Ave yet, but if Halloween decorating is any indication, it should be an amazing display. Did the King’s Hwy house have the moon trampoline?

Crazy bright menagerie on Woodlawn Ave near Nelson Ferry. Only thing not glowing is the “no dog pooping” sign.

We always like the house on Church St. which has both Christmas decorations and a mini-Stonehenge in the front yard. Excellent!
