    Decorate Decatur – Halloween Edition!

    Decatur Metro | October 7, 2010 | 9:56 am

    From October’s Decatur Focus…

Decatur will hold its first official Halloween Decorating Contest this year. Residents and businesses are invited to decorate homes and/or businesses and submit a photo to [email protected] by noon on Thursday, Oct. 28. Please include your name and address.

Judges will make their decision Thursday evening and the winners will be posted on the City of Decatur website, the Downtown Decatur Facebook page, and on www.thedecaturminute.com blog. Winners will receive a special yard sign on Friday, Oct. 29, to display throughout the weekend.

Many thanks to Jake Tockerman, who submitted a request for this special holiday decorating contest. Thanks also to Rik Abt and Sally Hamilton, 252 Kings Highway, who submitted this photo of their decorated home last year. Let the Halloween decorating begin!

If you have questions or need more information email [email protected] or call 678-553-6547.

At Monday’s Decatur City Commission meeting, Ms. Abel elaborated a bit further on this event.  Apparently, young Mr. Tockerman was spurred to the suggestion of a Halloween version of “Decorate Decatur” because his family didn’t celebrate Christmas and he wanted a chance to compete in a Decatur house decorating competition.  In reward for his creative genius, Tockerman was offered an honorable seat on the Supreme Court of House Decor, but he turned it down because he wanted to compete.

Ms. Abel also mentioned that the winner of the contest this year will receive something called the “Commissioner’s Cauldron”.

Note: the house in the picture above is not located anywhere near Decatur.

Adair Street Wins Big In “Decorate Decatur” Contest

    Decatur Metro | December 22, 2009 | 7:00 am

Sorry all. This was supposed to post this morning before I got on our flight back to ATL, but apparently the post just wasn’t feeling up to it.

    ——————————-

The winners of this year’s Decorate Decatur contest were announced by the city commission at last night’s meeting.  This year’s grand prize, in the form of the “Commissioner’s Cup”, went to Nancy Wilkinson & Susan Phillips’s “raucous display” at 205 Adair Street.  143 Adair also received a winning mention by the commission.

“Festive lights” gave U-Joint and Steinbecks top business decoration honors; along with Little Shop of Stories for it’s rooftop easy-access-for-Santa Christmas tree.

The shops along West Ponce (the strip formerly known as “WePo”) received a mention for “top streetscape experience”, while Lamont and Vidal and Ridgeland Avenue both won “best neighborhood” awards.

After the jump, see the city’s description of all of the city’s decoration winners.

    Decorate Decatur Decidedly

    Decatur Metro | December 15, 2009 | 8:25 am

    205 adair

    One of last year’s winners

The city’s Cheryl Burnette writes in reminding us that the judging for “Decorate Decatur” is just around the corner.

On Sunday December 20th, a set of anonymous judges will troll the four square miles of Decatur and decide who among the decorated homes and businesses deserves the coveted House Cup…I mean Commissioner’s Cup.  (The cup itself is so coveted that it was quite a struggle to get the cup away from last year’s winner.)

Other homes and businesses will also be declared winners and though no cup-honors will be awarded, they will receive braggy signage.

And if your neighbor is asking you to help them get guaranteed attention from the judges (or you just have a favorite house), call 678-553-6573 and leave the address.

Disclaimer: Decorate Decatur does not encourage residents or non-residents to decorate property which is not their own.  Decorating your neighbor’s property without permission may result in a termination of friendship, a lack neighborly hellos at the mailbox, or gaudy retaliation.

    Decorate Decatur! I Said Decorate!

    Decatur Metro | December 14, 2007 | 2:22 pm

If you happen to see a group of well-dressed people with clipboards trolling the streets of your neighborhood this Sunday, don’t be alarmed.  They aren’t checking to see if your lights are on timers or want you to give money to the Democratic Party of Georgia.  These folks are compiling a list of the “best dressed” holiday houses in Decatur.

On Sunday, December 16th, these unaccredited “decoration judges” will ride along the city streets looking to dub one Decatur home as the best decorated house in the city.  The top ten homes will be displayed on the city’s website.

What do you win?  Well the overall winner gets the “Commissioners Cup” according to the city’s website, while runners up get a pic on the website and 364 days of bragging rights (if that’s the kind of neighbor you are).

So, when the sun rises tomorrow, get those semi-wet leaves off the lawn and down to the curb, get up on a ladder and deck the freakin’ halls with lights, swags and giant inflatable snow globes.

If you’re still looking for inspiration after that motivational peptalk, check out the 2006 winners here.
