A Cross Section of Health Inspection Scores
Decatur Metro | May 24, 2009In an effort towards fairness, I’ve provided a larger list of restaurant and school cafeteria health inspection scores across the city after the jump. If anyone wants to put together an Atlanta-wide list, in an effort towards even greater fairness, go for it.
Looks to me like if you score below 80, you get a chance at redemption with a follow up inspection a couple weeks later. I assume this will also apply to Taqueria in the coming weeks. So, while you sip margaritas and wait in line, keep an eye out for an updated #.

Hey, DM, some of your links are off.
Thanks for putting all these together, it’d be interesting if someone wanted to go through and set up stats for all the food inspectors. Most of the lower scores were given out by one Erica Wilson, FWIW.
What’s up with an 87 for College Heights Early Childhood Learning Center? All the other CSD schools got a 95 or 100. To my mind, public schools should all get 100 whenever they are inspected, surprise or not. Unlike adults choosing to attend a commercial food establishment, kids have no choice about where they eat lunch.
I think it’s actually if you score below 70, they’ll come back. Technically, that’s failing, so they give you a chance to clean up and fly right and they’ll come back and look around before they shut you down. And the health department is stretched so thin, they’re coming around once a year instead of once very six months like they used to. (Like they’re supposed to. Like they threaten. )
I notice that the often maligned Ruby Tuesday restaurant has a very high inspection rating number. Others may find RT boring, but I have never had a bad food experience there.
How is “Thumbs Up!” doing?
CSD Snowflake and everyone else interested in the Decatur School System,
I agree the food our students consume is a very important and serious issue. If you would like to help improve the quality and nutritional value of Decatur School System’s food, please email me at , and consider joining the nutrition committee at College Heights. Farm to School is a great program and will eventually compliment the schools’ food choices, but there is a lot we can and should do before the first veggies are grown. Thanks! Aaron
@Joe C.
Erica W did the majority of the inspections (75%; 39/53 with inspector names). Based on the numbers there is no evidence that she was harsher than the others, although the there really isn’t enough data for the other inspectors for a meaningful analysis.
Inspector initials/average score/number of inspections:
AP/92/1
CF/88/2
DH/92.25/4
EW/89.8/39
FR/88/4
LS/91/2
RZ/84/1
Glad to see Feast with a 96. Feast rocks.

Don’t fret too much about the score. Anyone who’s read “Fast Food Nation’s” chapters on what ends up in school cafeterias knows that lapses in cleanliness may be the least of the troubles, all things considered… (Plug: All the more reason to support our new Farm to School initiative!)
I noticed that too Carolyn, but RT seems to be one of those places that originally scored in the 70s and then had a ‘retest’ a couple weeks later and scored in the 90s. Also, if you look at the original inspection sheet, you’ll see that the same thing happened in 2008…on Feb 5, 2008 they scored a “75”…then on Feb 25th they scored a “96”.
Seems like a trend.
Back in the early 2000s, my son was served totally spoiled milk there which was not noticed until he smelt it. Given that the milk was curdled, it was hard to understand how anyone could pour a glass and not notice. The response we got to our trying to give back the milk and get some fresh milk was that that was all they had. We reported the incident to the DeKalb County Board of Health but never heard what happened after that.
Admittedly that was years ago and the management staff may have changed; certainly the wait staff has. However, we’ve never set foot in there again. Given that none of their food is all that enticing, we’ve had no reason to re-evaluate.
Oakie, cool, thanks for actually doing the leg work.
