Moxie Java Bistro Closing
Decatur Metro | June 24, 2008Marla is good enough to point out this note on the Moxie Java website…
Closing Our Doors!
This Saturday Will Be Our Last Day!
Unfortunately, times are difficult to keep such a large place open. Currently we are looking for someone to buy the bistro from us to keep our establishment up and running. The economy and gas prices has left us no choice but to pull out and take our losses.
It pains us more than you can imagine to have to lose all that we have done for the area, city of Decatur and all of our regulars that return for something new each day! We hope that in the next few months something else will arise that will put us back on the map!
You all know how to keep in touch, so please do so!
Take care
Michael and Renee
A little unsettling to say the least. It only opened last November!
What happened? Was it the location or just the slowing economy?
Son of a…!
Moxie’s has provided a real service to Oakhurst kids and their growth in terms of good decision making, independence, etc. One of my 8 year old daughter’s favorite things to do is to escape our clutches for an hour or so and meet her friends there. I know I speak for her when I say they will be sorely missed.
Oh no!!! This is not fair! I love Moxie Java. Michael and everyone who works there is always so nice and the food is delicious! I’m completely bummed.
I never really knew it was there. They didn’t do much in the way of marketing. I guess undercapitalization was the cause.
Man, that sucks. We loved Moxie’s. Very family friendly, even by Decatur standards. They will be missed.
I LOVE Moxie Java! Very friendly, great desserts …. so sad
I think it actually only opened in late February, shortly after the Oakhurst Wine Crawl. Nice place. I’ll miss it.
From my end it seems like there was a ton of buzz about this place. The “opening” posting is one of the top all-time posts on the site.
And all of your responses reaffirm that. Strange that it couldn’t manage to stay open.
Never knew it was there and we try to support all of the Decatur spots.
I really feel for these businesses that close locally after they put their heart, soul, and sweat into it…not to mention their money. With commercial rental rates being what they are in Decatur, I would be leery to open anything…especially another coffee or food establishment..without some deep pockets and a business plan that recognizes I might lose money my first 12- 18 months. Margin in food establishments is razor thin.
And even then, I would have to question my plan if I couldn’t get a return of some sort within a year. Sorry to see them go the way of so many others in Decatur…WE HOPE YOU GUYS COME BACK STRONGER THAN EVER!
We went one time for dinner with friends and were not impressed with the food. The gelato and service, however, were great. We don’t have kids and found the atmosphere too fast-food to want to linger there.
So sad. Doesn’t it seem like that location has had more than its share of tragedies or failures, from the fire that drove Badda Bing to a new location to good places, like Moxie Java, not making it? Is it that the location is just too peripheral? Or the parking? I would have thought that the proximity to East Lake MARTA station and being on College Avenue would have enough traffic flow to support a good coffee place.
