Moxie Java Bistro Coming to Decatur

    Decatur Metro | January 11, 2008

We here at Decatur Metro have known about this new addition at the northern edge of Oakhurst (910 W. College Ave) since Silk: A Smoothie Cafe mentioned the potential neighborly competition in a profile over on Creative Loafing’s Fresh Loaf. But their recent liquor license approval reinvigorated my interest, so I quickly went to the internet for some answers.

Before long I found both the Decatur location and the franchise headquarters’ websites. (Yes, it is a national franchise…with locations in at least 13 states, mostly out west and in the south. The Decatur shop will be the first GA based Moxie Java). The Decatur location’s website is ripe with construction photos, a menu, background on the family that’s running the shop, and job applications.

A closer look at the menu conveys that this is much more than just a coffee house. In addition to the usual java drinks, Moxie Java will also serve baked goods, salads, soups, sandwiches and gelato.

Only thing I couldn’t find is an opening date. Please comment below if you know. UPDATE: Local resident and owner, Michael, tells us in the comments that Moxie Java should be open mid to late February.

Only time will tell how many coffee bars the city’s residents can support, and whether Moxie Java can over come the problems associated with location that have been described by the owner of Silk.

Regardless, it should be a nice neighborhood addition for the Oakhurst coffee addicts that live within walking distance!

First, let me thank you for your interest in our business. Being A local residentsfor the last 16 years, I feel that we needed to do more for the community. A kid friendly resturant, is just what the neighborhood needed. We hope to be open mid to late February. Please check our web site often as we will update weekly. Cheers!

That does not sound good for Silk. How does a landlord allow two coffe shops in the same building? That is immoral.

Silk has just started selling coffee in the last few weeks to get a jump on Moxie. Silk is a Smoothie cafe, not a coffee shop. If they play it smart, they could probably benefit by moxies arrival. Any way, I know the owners of Moxie and I will go there for the food. They have catered my events in the past, wow !is all I have to say!

I am a Northwest native currently living in Decatur and am extremely excited that there is a Moxie Java opening right around the corner from me! It’s like a piece of home for me, especially since I worked at one all through high school and managed one through most of college. I definitely plan on being a regular patron and am especially excited for some non-starbucks coffee!

I was fortunate to dine at Moxie this past Sunday after Church and I was very impressed by not only the food and drink selections, but the enthusiastic staff. The Gelato is to die for! Wonderful welcoming space for not only adults, but children as well. Congratulations Chef Michael!!! I’ll be back with hungry friends!!!
