Halloween Open Thread!
Decatur Metro | October 31, 2013 | 6:08 pmIt’s Halloween night, so here’s an open thread time to report all of your Halloween adventures!
As in years past, “Talk about your candy stomach ache, bumps in the night, or the cutest Halloween costume that came to your door. It’s totally up to you.”
I’m ready. So are the pups. In more than thirty years, maybe five Treaters total. Hoping for some Avery Street action tonight. Wanted to buy Hot Cheetoes and Takis but the stores were sold out! Hershey Kisses and Butterfingers will have to do. Oh, one more thing…
“It was a dark and cloudy night on the Old Dirt Road when a few brave children dared to venture up to the spooky old house when suddenly…”.
“…the front gate slammed shut behind them and when the frightened children turned to run, there was the dark silhouette of a tall, bald man between them and the gate. The dark figure spoke, in a tone as if he was once a teacher, “…
…and said “how dare you little gremlins trespass on sacred ground! You must be punished in a most severe manner. Now where’s my axe?”
The children screamed, dropped their bags of candy, and ran in the only direction available to them…the spooky old house! But things only got worse…
Big Smile. Thanks.
Good Chuckle. Thanks.
Thanks and no hidden agenda. Very Funny.
Hey for the adults out there….Twains moonshiners ball is tonight! Always a good time!
Favorite holiday sullied by all other family members being ill with a nasty virus. Don’t worry–they are quarantined. Candy is still safe at our house!
Looking for trick or treaters on Willow lane! Come get this candy before I eat it all!
Yay! A very cute and polite little Marine in dress blues. Hoo rah!
If your daughters were in a group with a newsie and Holly Golightly, my compliments. They were all very polite and their costumes were terrific!
She dressed as a hooker??
The Titanic came by our house, all lit up and puffing steam. Best of the night so far!
LOVE it!
Handing out Werther’s Originals!
Weeeerrrrrrtthhhhheeerrrrsssss…!
Where is everyone??
The candy is flying out the door. My dirty little secret? I’m hoarding all of the Kit Kats.
My wife is disappointed that all of our Kit Kats are gone.
Way more folks than usual. Had to go to second level of backup candy!
Cutest so far here was a newborn in a popcorn bag sling; it’s head was a popped corn.
They must have come to your house instead of ours. We had about 25 on East Parkwood Road (usually 3 or 4 times that number)
Things were hopping in my section of Oakhurst. Took the kids out trick or treating and saw several groups of adults chilling out on their front porches in Adirondack chairs or the like, handing out candy and sipping big glasses of red wine. Nice to see (really!).
Did you come down Pharr? Might have been us!
Naw, 3rd Ave. and Maxwell.
Cutest costume was 1 year old as baby chick. Not too many doorbell rings so we have asked kids to take two candies– some have refused. Such manners! Strangest experience has been opening door to parents holding 9 month old in costume – parents were arguing and trying to fish something out of kid’s mouth, they dropped kid’s bag of candy on the stoop, never said Happy Halloween or anything else to us, and were still bickering as we picked up their candy and sent them on their way. Hope their night gets better!
A first for me tonight. Two pregnant trick-or-treaters!
The store must have been out of the responsible young adult costumes. But seriously, kudos to those two for planning months in advance for Halloween.
“But seriously, kudos to those two for planning months in advance for Halloween.”
Bulldog, you now own this thread. That was damn funny.
Were they pregnant before or after ringing your doorbell?
My doorbell doesn’t work.
wow. we just shut the door after many many children and adults. most were cute, a few were scary, but the scariest of the night was the parent (?) who felt it necessary to yell “get in the m-f-ing car!”, but in it’s full form. nice. and happy halloween to you, too.
Oh, hell! AJC reporting a 5-year old trick-or-treating in Decatur was killed.
On Pepperdine Court, which Google Maps places in that part of Decatur that lies off Flat Shoals Pkwy near Snapfinger Rd.
Horrifying. That poor family.
Chief Booker came down my street and we had a nice long chat. One heck of a nice guy, and everything about him says “competence.” An outstanding leader of a great police force.
Not entirely. He’s only “competent” until something beyond his control happens again and he does all he can in response but it’s not fast or complete enough for some people who call for his firing.
This sounds like something you should take up with DPD. It doesn’t seem very appropriate to attack the man’s character under a screen name on a blog.
Bulldog, J_T’s comment was sarcastic, mocking the people who call for Booker’s firing (as in the threads about the crime wave this summer).
Damn. My sarcastic remark in response to the horrified response to my original sarcastic remark got moderated. TOK, obviously you are correct, but you forgot the first rule of sarcasm: if you have to explain it…
Don’t you worry, little doggy. Chief Booker and DPD know exactly who I am. Fortunately, they’re also competent at detecting sarcasm.
Sarcasm detector was turned off this morning. Back on and alarms are firing everywhere in my brain. Coffee helped.
Phew!
Anyone know of places that are taking candy? It needs to be out of my house.
I have a 2 bucket system. bucket 1: milky way, snickers and kit kats. bucket 2: dollar store candy bought LAST YEAR. bucket 2 is reserved for the teenagers who can’t be bothered to wear a costume and yes, the dollar store candy will be reused next year!
Best idea ever! I’m gonna buy the discounted candy today & totally do this next year. That’s the only part of Halloween I don’t like–the teenagers who are rude & don’t even have on costumes.
Last night was awesome! We go to Avery Street and its tributaries and are blown away every year by people’s creativity. It’s so much fun. Our son will have great memories of Halloween.
Had a great time hanging out on the front porch with my housemates (our house is split into 4 apartments, some of which have entrances around back — too confusing for a doorbell-based candy distribution system). The only weird thing was that some trick-or-treaters skipped our house! We decided they were scared off by the steep driveway leading up to the porch. Next year we’ll have to install a cable car.
Pretty good year. 95% of our candy gone! Cute kids, normal number of non costumed teens, cool parents walking by with beverages, a few parked cars at one end of the neighborhood or another and let their kids roam through – always welcome at our house. Our place was scary enough with scary music playing that a couple of toddlers were too scared to come up walk and were carried crying by parents! Great night all in all. Only issue is that our trick or treater brought home more candy than we gave away!
Halloween is so much fun in Decatur. Adair St. was again hopping- spooky wild west bone yards, giant cats dancing with disco aliens in laser lights, a rodeo rider on horse handing out candy and a “dead Jason” that actually made me yell when he rose up from the ground! Lots of super cute kids, even more polite this year (for the most part) and happy parents/neighborhood gatherings. Well done all!
Adair Street on Halloween should be added to Decatur’s list of official Festivals.
Best Halloween ever. We ran out of our prepared treat bags way too early and had to beg for candy from our neighbor to hold us while we made a CVS run for more. Figuring about 550 trick or treaters came by last night.
We drug the porch chairs and table out into the front lawn and sat there drinking beer and wine and eating chicken tortilla soup while passing out candy. Cute and polite trick-or-treaters. Neighbors and friends stopped by and chatted and as always we met some neighbors that we didn’t know before. I wish every night was Halloween.
