Tuscan Colors Transform Ontario Home by Studio Brocca

The Genesis of a Unique Ontario Residence

The inception of this Ontario home, crafted by Studio Brocca, was marked by the early arrival of green marble, setting the tone for a property where Italian roots and modern design blend seamlessly. Located on a plot previously home to a 1940s building, this new house not only hints at the neighboring French chateau but also deeply embodies the spirit of Tuscany.

“We chose the green marble as the very first piece for our home, even before construction started, and we went to great lengths to incorporate it,” explains Samantha Brocca. The homeowners add, “We have a deep affinity for green, which for us reflects the lush Italian landscape, the undulating hills, and the vibrant cypress trees. Given the house’s setting amidst mature greenery, the green hues also enhance the outside environment. We used the green marble in the bedroom’s open-concept closet too, which is encased in black metalwork that not only frames the space but also adds a touch of lightness and material interest.”

Design Philosophy: A Fusion of Styles

The 3,500-square-foot home is a study in the harmony of contrasting design elements. Its minimalistic architectural lines provide a solid framework, while the use of curves and arches introduces a gentle softness. This interplay of straight and flowing lines is evident across the home, from the spherical light fixtures to the staircase spindles, creating what Brocca describes as ‘warm minimalism’—a perfect phrase to encapsulate the essence of this space.

The home’s color scheme is deeply inspired by the Italian landscape, featuring dark greens that echo the cypress trees and rust hues reminiscent of terra cotta. “The colors bring to mind the Tuscan vineyards and rolling hillsides, yet the modern design elements transition these traditional colors into a contemporary context,” the family remarks. “This design not only connects us to various regions of Italy we’ve cherished but also enriches the colder Canadian months with its warmth and vibrant colors. In the bedroom, the arrangement of the wood-framed openings is evocative of lines of trees one might see in the Tuscan countryside.”
