Tortilla’s Heir “Bell Street Burritos” Now Open in Sweet Auburn Market

    Decatur Metro | September 17, 2010

Back in February we reported that Morehouse professor, Matt Hinton, had successfully recreated the defunct Tortilla’s burrito and that he was delivering them all over Atlanta, including to Decatur.  People were stoked.

Now Hinton’s Facebook page reports that he has opened up a brick-and-mortor location called “Bell Street Burittos” in the Sweet Auburn Market…

For those of you who don’t know, I’ve been making burritos and delivering them for the past year and a half to supplement my meager income as an adjunct professor of Religion. The schtick of West End Burritos (as it was formerly known) was that these are burritos “for those who miss Tortillas” (“Tortillas” being the legendary burrito shop that was on Ponce from the early 80’s till the early 00’s).

Somewhere along the way, I was convinced to open a brick and mortar burrito shop in the Sweet Auburn Curb Market– one of the really great places in Atlanta to go for a variety of food and people. So, after a few months of effort, cleaning, construction, painting and setting tile, we’re finally opening. And yes, the burritos are still in the manner of Tortillas, though we’ve added our own elements as well (or anyway, we stole ideas from other people too).

According to Omnivore Atlanta, current hours are around 11a-4p with a grand opening scheduled for Thursday, September 23rd (11a-8p).

Prof Recreates Tortillas Burritos; Delivers To Decatur

    Decatur Metro | February 8, 2010

Creative Loafing’s Omnivore reported this story a couple days back, but props go to self-proclaimed Tortillas-junkie Suzanne for pointing it out to me.

Part-time Morehouse professor Matt Hinton missed Tortillas burritos so much when they closed in 2003, that he’s recreated them and many of their other items from scratch.  And now he’s selling his Tortillas “cover band” creations to the public under the name West End Burritos!

If you ever went to Tortillas on Ponce before they closed, you know that they had the best burritos in Atlanta. Well, I have finally, after much trial and error, come VERY close (95%) to an exact replica of some of their most popular items, including both the red and green sauces. I will begin offering Tortillas style burritos and other sundries (see attached menu) next week which I will deliver to you!

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Each Monday [Update: Tuesdays to be added soon], I will make a delivery run from Downtown Decatur to West End. If you live within 2 miles or so of this route, you are eligible for delivery. I will deliver to your door or leave it on your stoop. Deliveries will occur from approx. 4-6:30, so every Monday can be Burrito night.

Hinton’s delivery zone extends from West End to Decatur (a map is shown on his order page).  The full West End Burritos menu can be found HERE, while you can read more about the venture on the West End Burritos Facebook page.
