When tasked with transforming a residence in Palm Springs, California, designer Nina Freudenberger engaged in a creative exchange that involved the home’s existing architecture, the surrounding desert environment, and notably, her clients’ extensive art collection. The project, undertaken by Freudenberger Design Studio, evolved without major structural changes, focusing instead on the art of precise furniture selection, restrained use of materials, and a carefully controlled color scheme to personalize the existing space deeply.

The art owned by the clients quickly emerged as the heart of the redesign. Rather than overshadowing this collection, Freudenberger employed a design principle she describes as “decorating to 92 percent.” This approach prioritizes moderation, allowing the art space to stand out and adapt over time. The residence features gallery-style walls, a soft and neutral color scheme, and versatile furniture arrangements, all of which spotlight the artwork while providing the clients with the option to alter displays as their preferences evolve.

Freudenberger points out, “It’s crucial to keep a space uncluttered,” reflecting the clients’ desire for an uncomplicated aesthetic.

In a locale renowned for its mid-century modern style, Freudenberger deliberately avoided clichés, opting instead for Post-Modern elements combined with her distinctive mix of Scandinavian minimalism and Californian casualness. This fusion creates a modern yet timeless look that respects the architectural history of Palm Springs without being confined by it.

The climate also played a role in the design choices. Instead of heavy fabrics, lighter, breathable materials were chosen to complement the desert’s expansive feel. Materials such as rift-sawn oak and Roman clay walls in golden wheat shades bring warmth, while cool whites and minimalistic touches maintain equilibrium. Freudenberger’s signature meticulous level 5 drywall finish provides a sleek, gallery-like backdrop for the artwork, reinforcing the home’s modern vernacular.

Beyond aesthetics, the home’s redesign focuses on functionality and comfort for both humans and pets across various activities, from everyday relaxation to special gatherings. The use of durable, stain-resistant textiles and sensible flooring ensures the space is both stylish and practical.
