Nestled in a building over a century old in Brooklyn, New York, a 1,700-square-foot loft has undergone a striking transformation. The design, orchestrated by Hormuz Batliboi from Batliboi Studio, was tailored for Valerie Tsvetkova, who oversees the creative services at Elizabeth Arden. This two-bedroom, two-bathroom abode marries the essence of historical architecture with contemporary creativity, offering a unique twist on traditional loft living.

The loft’s foundational structure, originally a manufacturing facility, played a significant role in guiding the aesthetic direction of the renovation. During the process, Batliboi discovered aged timber beams and steel connections hidden behind a lowered ceiling. Instead of covering these historical features, he chose to highlight them, allowing these structural elements to narrate the space’s history. These exposed features now serve as central visual elements, providing a sense of authenticity that is often absent in modern constructions.

Initially, the loft faced typical renovation challenges, such as outdated utilities and a poorly designed kitchen layout. Batliboi tackled these issues head-on by centralizing the utility systems and slightly elevating the flooring in certain sections to support new functionalities. This clever modification facilitated the integration of a streamlined kitchen setup centrally located within the residence.

Artistic Touches and Thoughtful Design

One of the standout features in the main living area, particularly noticeable in the dining space, is a 15-foot long, sculptural green shelf that stretches along the wall. This shelf, with its fluid, wave-like shape, is constructed from CNC-milled wooden layers joined together. The specific green hue was carefully selected to complement the existing pendant lights in the room. This piece is not only functional, doubling as a sideboard, but also serves as a prominent artistic statement, showcasing Batliboi’s ability to merge utility with visual appeal.

In the kitchen, the use of stainless steel countertops is beautifully juxtaposed with brass details and natural stone, creating a warm yet sophisticated atmosphere. Batliboi opted for a modified flat-pack cabinet system from REFORM, which he expertly customized to achieve a sleek, built-in look. This approach skillfully balances luxury with sustainability, avoiding the extravagance of fully custom units.

The entire home features a deliberate mix of contrasting materials and custom details, enhancing the eclectic yet harmonious vibe of the design. The bathroom is particularly striking, with its dark zellige tiles, matte black floors, and a dramatic granite shower, all illuminated by natural light from a large window. Conversely, other areas incorporate penny tiles and marble, offering a tactile and visual diversity that enriches the living experience.
