Jimmy Swaggart, Televangelist Brought Down by Sex Scandals, Dead at 90

Jimmy Swaggart, the once-celebrated televangelist whose career was overshadowed by several sexual misconduct scandals, passed away on Tuesday at the age of 90.

Swaggart was in a critical state at a hospital in Louisiana following a cardiac arrest on June 15; details of his condition were disclosed to his congregation during a prayer service on the same day.

“Today, with heavy hearts, we announce that Brother Swaggart has concluded his journey on earth and has met his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ,” stated his official Facebook page on Tuesday. “This is a moment he has long sung about and awaited. He has now embraced his beloved Savior and has crossed into eternal glory. We find comfort in knowing that we will reunite with him in the future.”

“For more than 70 years, Brother Swaggart dedicated his life to preaching the gospel, singing spiritual hymns, and guiding millions toward the redemptive power of Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit,” the announcement continued. “He was not only a preacher but also a devout worshipper, a fierce spiritual warrior, and a testament to God’s grace and mercy. His faith remained unwavering as he followed the paths God laid before him, earning God’s favor through his steadfast belief.”

Born in Louisiana, Swaggart was a cousin to famed musicians Jerry Lee Lewis and Mickey Gilley. By the late 1980s, he had become a prominent figure in televangelism, with his ministries generating approximately $142 million in revenue in 1986 alone, according to The Associated Press.

Swaggart’s first notable scandal occurred in 1988, involving a prostitute at a New Orleans motel. This incident was infamously captured by a photographer hired by Marvin Gorman, a minister Swaggart had previously accused of adultery. Following the scandal, Swaggart famously confessed his transgressions in an emotional televised speech known as his “I have sinned” address.

In another incident in 1991, police stopped Swaggart for erratic driving in Indio, California, and discovered him with Rosemary Garcia, a prostitute who claimed he had propositioned her. This scandal led to him temporarily stepping down from the leadership of his ministry.

Swaggart also faced criticism for his contentious statements regarding Catholicism and Judaism, claiming that the Catholic Church was not genuinely Christian and alleging that Jews had suffered over the centuries due to their denial of Christ.
