Kenny Ortega Pays Tribute to the Late Cameron Boyce as Descendants Turns 10: ‘If I Could Have Imagined a Son for Myself,’ It Would Be Him

As Disney’s Descendants marks its 10th anniversary, celebrating the franchise isn’t complete without a heartfelt tribute to Cameron Boyce, the beloved actor whose performances defined the first three movies.

Remembering Cameron Boyce: The Heart of *Descendants*

Kenny Ortega, the director of the films, recently shared his memories of Boyce during an interview at our New York studio with TVLine. “Cameron was our inspiration and everyone’s favorite, our eternal youth,” Ortega expressed. “He was incredibly generous and ambitious. Not only was he keen on learning film direction and choreography by observing me, but he was also actively involved in humanitarian efforts like constructing freshwater wells in Africa’s impoverished regions. His compassion and activity were boundless, and he achieved so much before he even turned 21.”

Cameron Boyce’s Impact and Legacy

Already a familiar face on the Disney Channel through his regular role on *Jessie*, Boyce was initially a tough sell for the *Descendants* project. According to Ortega, network executives doubted his willingness to join an ensemble cast instead of leading his own film. However, after a fortuitous meeting with Ortega, Boyce enthusiastically agreed to join. He was eventually cast as Carlos, the son of Cruella de Vil, starring alongside Dove Cameron as Mal, Sofia Carson as Evie, and Booboo Stewart as Jay, which cemented the foundation of what would become a beloved chapter in Disney Channel Original Movie history.

Tragedy and Memory

In a tragic turn of events, Boyce passed away from an epileptic seizure in June 2019, just a month prior to the premiere of *Descendants 3*. His death profoundly impacted those close to him, including Ortega, who serves on the advisory board of the Cameron Boyce Foundation. This foundation not only aims to raise awareness and funds for epilepsy research but also supports the causes Boyce was passionate about.

Reflecting on their personal connection, Ortega shared, “I was heartbroken, as were we all. I would often tell him, jokingly, ‘You know you’re my favorite, but don’t tell anyone.’ On *Descendants 3*, I told him again, and he replied, ‘Oh Kenny, everybody knows.’” Ortega continued, “I truly adored him. He was like the son I never had. Learning of his passing was one of the saddest moments of my life. But now, the pain has somewhat subsided, and I am left with joy and gratitude for the time we spent together, witnessing his incredible talent and personality.”

Looking Back and Forward

In the full interview, which includes a video with Ortega, he elaborates on his experiences with the *Descendants* franchise and the moment he realized they had a major hit. As the celebration of the decade-long legacy of *Descendants* continues, Boyce’s memory remains an integral part of the journey, reminding us of his significant contributions both on and off the screen.
