F5: Tina Ramchandani on Her Dog Figaro, Flowers, Color + More

Tina Ramchandani was raised in the United States, but her frequent travels across the world exposed her to a myriad of colors, textures, and cultural experiences. It was during one family trip that she developed a profound passion for design. “Entering a hotel, I was filled with emotion,” Ramchandani recalls. “For the first time, I fully experienced a place with all my senses. At that moment, I decided I wanted to capture that sensation in my career.”

After earning a bachelor’s degree in interior design from the Art Institute of Philadelphia, Ramchandani sharpened her design acumen at several firms in Manhattan, including Vicente Wolf Associates. She found immense support and gained valuable insights from the design community, which she found crucial.

In 2014, she launched her own firm in New York, Tina Ramchandani Creative. She focuses on what she calls Soulful Minimalism, which features warm, modern interiors with bespoke elements. Ramchandani strives to create spaces that not only enhance but also reflect the personal stories of her clients.

Ramchandani approaches her projects with a natural curiosity and a strong desire to connect, which enables her to grasp what is truly important to her clients. She carefully listens to their unique requirements and transforms these into a tangible reality. This process keeps her engaged and fuels her commitment to her craft.

Outside of her professional projects, Ramchandani finds joy in pottery, another artistic endeavor that she finds inspiring. “It started as a method to calm my mind, but it has grown into a beloved creative outlet,” she comments. “I have even crafted a few vases that now adorn our studio, serving as beautiful, functional reminders to take it slow.”

Today, Tina Ramchandani joins us for Friday Five!

1. Figaro

Figaro is not just a pet, he’s part of the family. He’s known for his expressive (and occasionally critical) looks and his adventurous spirit. Our shared experiences bring immense happiness and remind me to live in the moment and cherish unconditional love.

2. Travel

Traveling is integral to both my personal life and professional design philosophy. Whether I’m venturing within the country or internationally, I’m continuously inspired by things like color combinations on ancient buildings, the texture of indigenous fabrics, or the tranquility of a serene spot. Immersing myself in different cultures enhances my clarity and creativity.

3. Flowers

Flowers naturally bring joy. Whether they’re artfully arranged in a room or found unexpectedly in nature, they provide a moment of beauty and grace. I adore how they introduce color in both elegant and unexpected ways, invigorating a space subtly yet significantly.

4. Color

I view color as deeply emotional. From bold, vibrant shades to subtle layers of whites, color brings depth and narrative to any space. Its thoughtful application allows a home to not only speak but to do so authentically.

5. Performance Fabrics

Given the beautiful imperfections of life, including my dog, my nieces, and my own occasional clumsiness, durable and easy-to-clean fabrics are essential. Thankfully, today’s performance fabrics do not sacrifice aesthetics for functionality, offering options that are both stylish and sturdy.

Works by Tina Ramchandani:

Design on a Dime – Soulful Feminism

In our second year at Design on a Dime, we infused our signature Soulful Minimalism with a playful twist themed around Soulful Feminism. This concept allowed us to express the vigor, hope, and creativity of our younger years. The vignette was both retrospective and progressive, featuring bold styling and distinct personality.

Library-Office – Boerum Hill

This Boerum Hill residence required interiors that matched the vibrancy of its exterior. The library-office space was crafted to integrate smoothly with the architecture while making its own visual statement. A combination of rich colors and textured layers resulted in a space that serves as both a haven and a place for reflection.

Georgetown – House Beautiful Cover

This colonial home in Georgetown is one of our most cherished projects. From the beginning, there was a profound creative synergy with the client, allowing for daring choices and vibrant colors throughout. This project also marked a significant achievement as it was featured on the cover of House Beautiful’s Color Issue, a milestone that brought great pride to our studio.

Hamptons Outdoor Living

We had the honor of overseeing this ground-up project in the Hamptons from its inception to completion, both inside and out. The client desired a home that balanced their modern New York taste with the laid-back style of traditional shingle exteriors. This image showcases one of my favorite areas – a sleek, spacious outdoor setting perfect for both lively gatherings and peaceful moments. This project holds a special place in my heart as it was the first completed by my firm.

Central Park West – A Vibrant Sanctuary

Designed to be a personal sanctuary for a dynamic young professional, this space takes inspiration from the lush greenery of Central Park. The color palette directly reflects the outdoor scenery, bringing a sense of the outdoors inside. The interiors are designed to transition smoothly between intimate and festive atmospheres, accommodating everything from quiet dinners to vibrant parties.
