Revolutionizing Small Spaces with Shipping Containers
The concept of transforming shipping containers into functional living spaces, workshops, or temporary retail pop-ups is hardly groundbreaking. However, the Milan-based architectural and design firm m2atelier has adopted a fresh and innovative approach with their project The Crafted Capsule. Rather than focusing on the inherent space constraints of a shipping container, this experiential installation emphasizes streamlining modern living to its fundamental necessities without any compromise on quality or comfort.
The Crafted Capsule at Genova Design Week 2026
During the Genova Design Week 2026, m2atelier showcased The Crafted Capsule in collaboration with top Italian experts in various fields including fabrication, lighting, textiles, and leatherwork. This collaborative effort was pivotal in redefining the possibilities of small-scale interiors. The project is a testament to how precise design and careful material choice can effectively utilize minimal space.
According to m2atelier founders Marco Bonelli and Marijana Radovic, “The Crafted Capsule is about boiling down contemporary lifestyle to its core components without losing the essence of emotion, comfort, or aesthetics. It’s a deliberate endeavor to forge significant experiences via design rather than physical dimensions.”

Material Mastery and Design Ingenuity
The success of The Crafted Capsule lies in its meticulous assembly of materials and expert technical knowledge. NIVA was at the forefront of the internal engineering and most of the construction processes, while Materica brought in the distinctive textured, zinc-metallized wall panels that add a unique visual touch to the installation. Luce5 enhanced the space with integrated lighting solutions, such as an illuminated mirror situated above the bed that helps to visually enlarge the space. The industrial vibe of the container is softened by luxurious textiles from C&C Milano and rich blue leather supplied by Foglizzo, adding layers of warmth and texture to the interior.
Instead of viewing small-scale living as a series of compromises, The Crafted Capsule demonstrates that with the right focus on proportions, material choices, and craftsmanship, even the smallest spaces can be transformed into welcoming and attractive environments.
