Located in the heart of Toronto’s Junction neighborhood, the Willow Play Cafe blends elegance with playful charm. The design firms Denizens of Design and DS Studio have skillfully renovated what was once a dive bar into a cozy, welcoming cafe adorned with wooden panels, a coffered ceiling, vintage linoleum in a checkerboard pattern, classic bentwood chairs, and ambient lighting. This inviting atmosphere transitions seamlessly into a magical Alice in Wonderland-like area through a portal shaped like a keyhole.
The children’s play area is designed with as much care and attention to detail as the cafe itself. Far from the bright and flashy signs often associated with children’s play areas, this space offers a refined environment where children can engage in activities. It includes walls equipped with Lite Brite, soft green foam steps, and a striking cherry-red slide.

Christina DiAdamo, the cafe’s owner, was inspired by her experiences as a tech entrepreneur and a mother to create this innovative social space. “The concept was never just about providing a space for children to merely run wild,” she stated in a press release. She emphasized the cafe’s commitment to STEM-focused activities and educational methods such as the Reggio Emilia approach, aiming to nurture curiosity, creativity, and developmental growth in children.
The cafe is envisioned as a “third space” in the urban landscape, where parents can relax with a coffee while their children safely explore and learn independently. The design theme revolves around the willow tree, reflected in the use of form, color, and dynamic elements within the cafe. According to the designers, the space is fluid, with cafe fixtures that cleverly transform into components of the play area, and decorative elements that become interactive experiences.
This thoughtfully designed interior includes curved millwork with built-in shoe storage at its base. Above, a ceiling with organic, amoeba-like shapes adds a touch of whimsy, signaling the playful nature of the space. In the play zone, STEM activities are integrated directly into the wooden panels.
Safety is a paramount concern, with features like rubber floors, sculptural foam steps, and climbing and sliding structures designed to ensure a safe environment. The play structure also includes mesh-filled cutouts for additional interactive fun at various levels.
The party room, situated at the rear of the cafe, includes a small kitchen area highlighted by a cheerful yellow bead motif and whimsically designed cabinetry, all under a faux-plant canopy that brings cohesion to the space.
“Our goal was for every element to feel integral, not merely decorative,” explained Dyonne Fashina, founder of Denizens. “The cafe and play area are unified; each component is crafted for both imaginative play and practical use.” As a third space for family gatherings, the Willow Play Café could set a precedent for similar establishments, enriching community life with its enchanting setting.
“Design influences community living profoundly,” Fashina remarked. “The Willow is designed to be gentle, inquisitive, and robust, much like the tree it’s named after. It’s a place for relaxation, awe, and collective growth.”
