UPDATED: Power Restored, Scott Blvd Reopened

Decatur Metro | August 3, 2012

UPDATE:  The Decatur Minute is now saying that Scott has reopened.

Some of you are already discussing this in FFAF.  Here’s an update from The Decatur Minute…

August 3 • 9:00 a.m.

A power pole on Scott Blvd caught fire last night so the power is out on Scott Blvd from Willow Lane to Superior Avenue. Decatur Public Safety and Georgia Power are on scene and it is estimated that the repairs should take two to three hours. Be advised that the two in-bound lanes on Scott Blvd are blocked, so use alternate streets if you must travel in this area.

Check back for any updates.

Racktastic!

Scott | November 30, 2011

Spotted today on the Square was this band of merry gentlemen installing what appears to be new bike racks. A quick check with the city’s Amanda Thompson (yes, she belongs to each and every one of us) confirms. Sez Amanda:

“The bicycle rack installation is a project in partnership with Bike Decatur to install more bicycle parking on the Square. Four racks are being installed at the Decatur MARTA Station near Squash Blossom with two more located on East Court Square. Four racks have already been installed on East Ponce de Leon in front of the historic DeKalb County courthouse. A total of 10 bicycle racks are being installed through the Bike Decatur program.”

There may be reasonable objections to public/private partnerships in certain contexts but Decatur doesn’t seem to be one of them. Time and time again, it seems our tax dollars get stretched further when involving the passions of the community. Bike on!

Construction of Decatur Cemetery Bridges Almost Complete

Decatur Metro | September 14, 2011

Chris Billingsley sends in this great little report and some excellent pics from the Decatur Cemetery…

The bridges across the Decatur Cemetery creek are almost finished. For those of us who have walked through this rather wild part of Decatur east of the cemetery, the bridges and path will probably bring more walkers and improved safety but change the area to a more park-like setting. Somewhat sad but I’m glad that the unusual rock outcropping just south of one of the bridges will remain. In a small way, it makes me think of the waterfalls in the Druid Hills area that I enjoyed exploring so much as a boy (follow the Westchester neighborhood creek a few hundred yards outside the city boundary).

More pics after the jump!

Tree Falls on Ansley Street Overnight

Decatur Metro | May 17, 2011

Trish sends in this pic and writes in…

This tree is located (near) the intersection of Kings Hwy and Ansley Street. This picture was taken at 6:30am, so traffic to surrounding schools WILL be affected.

The tree fell almost exactly at 12 AM Tuesday morning. Husband heard the crack and knew that it must be one of the several old oak trees that line the adjacent property at the intersection (above). The entire tree fell!
