Racktastic!
Scott | November 30, 2011 | 2:42 pmSpotted today on the Square was this band of merry gentlemen installing what appears to be new bike racks. A quick check with the city’s Amanda Thompson (yes, she belongs to each and every one of us) confirms. Sez Amanda:
“The bicycle rack installation is a project in partnership with Bike Decatur to install more bicycle parking on the Square. Four racks are being installed at the Decatur MARTA Station near Squash Blossom with two more located on East Court Square. Four racks have already been installed on East Ponce de Leon in front of the historic DeKalb County courthouse. A total of 10 bicycle racks are being installed through the Bike Decatur program.”

There may be reasonable objections to public/private partnerships in certain contexts but Decatur doesn’t seem to be one of them. Time and time again, it seems our tax dollars get stretched further when involving the passions of the community. Bike on!

Be careful. Chick fil a lawyers might be lurking.
Nice to see the new bicycle racks going in. Bike Decatur applied for a $1000.00 “seed money” grant from Georgia Bikes!, Georgia’s statewide bicycle advocacy group. The Bike Decatur group decided to put $500.00 towards bicycle racks and asked the City to match that amount. So now cyclists have some nice new racks around the square.
By the way, the Georgia Bikes “seed money” comes from a grant awarded by the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety (GOHS) to promote safer cycling and other advocacy efforts. The grant money comes directly from the sale of the Share The Road license tags that a number of us persuaded the State Legislature to allow some years back. At that time, funds from speciality tags had to go through a state agency and the GOHS folks seemed the best fit.
Seed money grants have been awarded in a number of Georgia communities. So now you know where your tag money went and why it’s worthwhile to keep renewing your Share The Road tag.
metro i am disappoint
baed on the headline i thought a shoe modeling establishment was coming to the square.
Excellent location!
That area really needed more racks.
Thanks to all involved in getting this done.
Yet there are no bike racks east of Church on Ponce. Cyclists are locking there bikes on the benches and sign posts. Why no racks down here?
