    Decatur Arts Festival Poster Revealed!

    Decatur Metro | May 2, 2014

    daf poster

Dennis at Next Stop…Decatur shared this photo from yesterday’s Decatur Arts Festival poster unveiling. From the Decatur Arts Fest website…

This year’s Arts Festival poster artwork was created by Lulu Kaufman of Cuthbert, Georgia. Her work, she says, celebrates laughter, love, nature, and life, and embraces the spirit of “girl power.”

After traveling and living all around the globe, Lulu has settled in southwest Georgia. She works in her studio on an antebellum horse farm, painting on recycled roof tin, reclaimed barn wood and old windows. Lulu travels to art shows, galleries and shops across the southeast, she says, “spreading love and sunshine.” She’s also the designer for official Jimmy Buffet tour T-shirts.

Decatur Postcard Submissions Due Friday, April 11th

    Decatur Metro | April 2, 2014

From the Decatur Arts Alliance website…

The 2014 Decatur Postcard Project is looking for artists, students, residents, businesses and members of the community who would like to submit images that reflect different aspects of the city. If you have photos or other artwork that captures the essence of what Decatur is all about and would like to share, send in your work. Submissions are welcome from all ages.

A jury will select six pieces that best represent Decatur for a set of 6 x 4 postcards, which will go on sale in May. The cards will be available at the Decatur Visitors Center and local retailers.

Keep in mind as you select your entries: brides like to use the postcards for wedding “Save the Dates” and parents like to use them for children’s thank you notes.

Submission deadline: Friday, April 11, 2014.
More details about the guidelines and a printable application are available here. (PDF)

New Public Art in Downtown Decatur Hides Sidewalk Trash Cans

    Decatur Metro | April 1, 2014

    trashart

Remember those unsightly garbage cans along the wall outside of Starbucks in downtown Decatur?  They are no more.  Or seen no more, at least!

The Decatur Downtown Development Authority recently funded a public art project to screen the trash bins – which serve many small businesses in the area, not just Starbucks – from the street.  The new screens are now in place – which you can see above.

Asst. City Manager Lyn Menne tells DM that the screen was created by Jason Smith of Smith Iron Works.

Tickets Still Available for This Afternoon’s Performance of “Hairspray: The Musical” at DHS

    Decatur Metro | March 23, 2014

The Decatur Education Foundation’s Gail Rothman asked us to pass along word that tickets are still available for this afternoon’s DHS performance of “Hairspray: the Musical”.  More info below!

YES! Tickets are still available for the FINAL PERFORMANCE of the Decatur High School production of Hairspray: the Musical at the DHS Performing Arts Center TODAY (Sunday, March 23) at 2:00pm.   The Box Office opens at 1:00pm and tickets are $12 for adults and $8 for students (cash only).

Set in Baltimore in 1962, this Tony Award-winning musical introduces us to the loveable, plus-size teen Tracy Turnblad who has only one desire — to dance on the popular Corny Collins Show. When her dream comes true, Tracy is transformed from social outcast to sudden star. She must use her newfound power to dethrone the reigning Teen Queen, win the affections of heartthrob Link Larkin, and integrate a TV network, all without denting her ‘do!’  The performers have played to sold out audiences and standing ovations for the past two nights so don’t miss your chance to see these incredibly talented students in this fun and fabulous production!
