Remember those unsightly garbage cans along the wall outside of Starbucks in downtown Decatur? They are no more. Or seen no more, at least!
The Decatur Downtown Development Authority recently funded a public art project to screen the trash bins – which serve many small businesses in the area, not just Starbucks – from the street. The new screens are now in place – which you can see above.
Asst. City Manager Lyn Menne tells DM that the screen was created by Jason Smith of Smith Iron Works.

Hallelujah!
Next we need to get Howard Schultz to fund sweeping and pressure-washing. The most prominent corner in the City is pretty skanky.
No doubt. We mention that every time we walk by. Littered with cigarette butts and everything just seems sticky and stinky. Would love to see this business owner take a bit more pride in their surroundings.
Noticed the new screen last night, it looks great. There was also some pressure washing going on in front of Starbucks.
Good to hear. I’m looking forward to walking by to see how it makes a difference.
Not art.
Momma always told me if you don’t have anything nice to say…
“Art” is subjective. Jason is a very skilled craftsman – he also did the piece up on the square behind the gazebo. I say, nicely done Jason! And, thank you for your hard work in making our city a more aesthetically pleasing place.
+100 for the screen !
Agree J_T – it is not art, but money well spent any way.
Not until someone tags it or applies what they believe to be an ironic sticker.
But actually, I like how it looks and do think it’s nice.
I think this is the intended site for Jason Smith:

What are they doing about the smell?
that’s the art part.
+1
This is great – I’ve been wondering why it was so easy to leave so much yuck on the street.
