DeKalb Cityhood Movements Look To 2015 Legislative Session

With all the recent annexation talk – big and small – this continues to be quite relevant to all DeKalb residents. From Atlanta Intown this morning…

The three cityhood movements – Briarcliff, Lakeside and Tucker – have not gone away and are actively meeting and planning for consideration during the 2015 Georgia Legislature session. All three efforts failed to gain the necessary votes to get referendums on this year’s ballot.

Supporters of the City of Briarcliff Initiative will speak Wednesday, July 2, at 6 p.m. to the DeKalb Operations Task Force at Maloof Auditorium, 1300 Commerce Drive, in Decatur.

Should Alternative Forms of Transportation Be Illegal in Downtown Decatur?

Back in 2010, the Decatur City Commisson outlawed riding skateboards, kick scooters, rollerskates/blades in downtown Decatur after receiving resident complaints “about skateboarders who disregard pedestrians and cause unsafe conditions on crowded sidewalks and in crowded public areas”, along with damage that was done to the Celebration Statue on the MARTA plaza.

And while the damage to public and private property is inexcusable, the ordinance went far beyond that, making it illegal to ride any of these vehicles in the downtown “pedestrian zone”, which is basically most of downtown Decatur.  Here’s part of the ordinance wording…

No person shall operate or cause to be operated a coaster, roller skates, skateboard, in-line skates or similar device in or upon any public street within the pedestrian preference area, any public sidewalk, path, streetscape, or driveway adjacent to any public street within the pedestrian preference area, or any municipally owned parking lot adjacent to any public street within the pedestrian preference area.

Four years hence, there’s a resurgence in these alternative forms of transportation around the U.S., as urban populations increase and folks are looking for car-alternatives (you’re welcome that I didn’t write “car-ternatives”).  The Wall Street Journal recently reviewed a slew of electric skateboards aimed at “yuppie commuters”. A recent post on The Atlantic’s City Lab website featured a video that argues “Skateboarding is Transportation, Too”.  In the densest cities, like NYC and San Fran, more commuters are choosing kick scooters to get around.  (On top of all that, I saw a guy riding a scooter through Emory Village a few weeks back and thought, “man you can’t do that in Decatur!”  That’s a data point!)

This seems a relevant discussion for Decatur, which has mainly focused on accommodating pedestrians and cyclists.  While walking and cycling are certainly the most popular forms of alt-commuting, Decatur’s downtown MARTA train station would seem a good reason to take a second look at this broad ordinance.  Taking a legal form of transportation – like a bike – on a MARTA train is certainly more cumbersome than taking a kick scooter (aka Razor scooter), a skateboard or a pair of rollerblades on the train. But to do so, you’d only be able to ride the board/scooter/blades to the outer limits of the pedestrian zone and then walk to the station from there.

So, here’s the question: should Decatur’s ordinance be so broad as to make it illegal to ride all of these alternative forms of transportation all the time in downtown Decatur?

Decatur’s 4th of July Plans

Here’s a summary of Decatur’s 4th of July plans from the Decatur Minute.  What are the odds of dry weather this year?

We are looking forward to celebrating Independence Day in Decatur.  Decorate your bike, wagon, or scooter-dress up in a silly costume, or go big and create a patriotic float to be a part of our annual community parade- the Pied Piper Parade!

Have a kazoo band? Come join us!  Play the tuba? Come join us! The more the merrier.  Line-up is at 5:30pm on Friday, July 4th at the Decatur First Baptist Church.  Pedestrians gather on the lawn and vehicles will be lined up by volunteers in the parking lot.

Concert on the square features Callanwolde Concert Band. Parade 6 p.m.; Concert 7 p.m.; Fireworks at dark.

Quick Grocery Delivery Debuts in Decatur/Atlanta

Gwyneth points out this AJC article this morning…

Want to do your grocery shopping in one hour without leaving your house? Check out Instacart, the new online grocery delivery service that debuted in Atlanta today.

…Originally launched in San Francisco, the service allows you to select grocery items from multiple stores and have them delivered in an hour for $5.99 on orders above $35. Currently in Atlanta, you can order from Kroger or Costco and your first Instacart order (over $10) is delivered free.

If you’re not a Costco member, this is a great way around that barrier, since Instacart does not require a Costco membership to order items from the store. The company expects to add other stores in the future. Other cities have stores such as Whole Foods Market and Safeway available through Instacart.

…For now, Instacart is only available ITP for neighborhoods including Buckhead, Midtown, Downtown, Decatur, Virginia-Highland, Brookhaven, West Atlanta, Lenox and Old Fourth Ward. It will expand to areas OTP in the coming weeks, O’Connor says.
