Are The Sophs the Next Big Rock Sensation Since The Strokes?

By Tyler Jenkins

The Sophs est-il le groupe de rock le plus prometteur depuis les Strokes ?

The esteemed British label Rough Trade Records has recently inked a deal with an exciting new band hailing from Los Angeles, accompanied by a compelling debut single.

Arriving with a bang on the music scene, The Sophs, an indie rock ensemble, holds a debut single and an upcoming tour. They captivated Rough Trade Records (home to artists like Peter Doherty, Pulp, Dean Blunt) with their “raw honesty, fiery intrusive thoughts, and musical eclecticism,” according to a press release.

In their single Sweat, where the influence of The Strokes is palpable, Ethan Ramon’s velvety voice narrates the denial accompanying grief against a backdrop of soft guitar chords, culminating explosively just seconds before an abrupt end. The song’s video presents us with a neurotic singer staring unblinkingly into the camera, while Lynchian lights flicker in the background. Their second single, At Your Worst (You Tried Your Best), is equally unpredictable, with a succession of genres and influences, featuring a vulnerable voice reminiscent of Jeff Buckley and a tone akin to “Drown” by the Smashing Pumpkins, creating a distinctive outcome.

A Label’s Instant Attraction

Blending the discomfort of conflicting emotions with beauty is central to this band, as the lead singer states: “It’s not just the essence of the song, but of the band and its overall message.” This mission has successfully charmed Geoff Travis and Jeanette Lee, co-founders of Rough Trade Records, who pursued the band fervently after hearing a demo. Ethan Ramon describes this as an “act of faith that signifies a perfect synergy.”

Both tortured and absurd, this unusual sextet is just beginning its journey. With an album release date still pending, they kick off an American tour on May 30th in Los Angeles, followed by performances in the UK and finally making a stop at Supersonic Records in Paris on September 8th.
